I'm certainly enjoying this book but its a bit frustrating having Essun ignore her daughter and 'quest'. Hoa could probably get her closer at anytime whenever she is ready. But she's too busy surviving right now.

On the other hand, the Nassun and Syn Anagist chapters are doing a lot of worldbuilding. Seems the dead civilization decided to power their world/tech by directly and brutally using the core & life of the planet. And that clearly went wrong at some point.

I'm very interested to see all this come together in the final few chapters.

I kind of felt the opposite Geoff - I think I would have been more disturbed if Essun had left everyone and gone after Nassun - I like the way she has bonded with the group, and I think living with them has changed her for the better - it has helped her see how Raga and stills can live together, etc.

I was surprised to see how things were powered, and loved how that fits in with the world and seasons.

I don't think it's explicit in the book, but I'm not sure if Hoa would have known where to go to to find Nassun. He would have known the site of where Nassun killed Jija because that's where Nassun was during the climax of the previous book.

I loved all the Syl Anagist chapters. The way that the deadciv treated the Niess and their created-Niess is such a profound injustice, particularly considering the revelation of the Briar Patch that we get here.

Yes! The Briar Patch was shocking. I really didn't want to hear those Syl Anagist chapters at first because I was wanting what I considered the main story. But then they turned into the main story for me - because it explained why everything existed.

The world building parts have been the high light for me so far as well.

Did anyone else get a Blaine the Train (Dark Tower/The Waste Lands) vibe? I kept waiting for the train to turn evil. Although I guess Father Earth did that instead I suppose..

I'm not sure where I come down on Essun not going after Nassun immediately. I do agree she didn't know where to go though.
