Titania wreck & the unclaimed crate

I am not able to figure out the following - the crate containing the 5 gowns was pulled from the Godspeed's cargo and was sent to Crosbie in Hokitika aboard Titania. When Titania crashed, why didn't Crosbie go looking for his crate and claim it?

When the Titania crashed, the bill of lading on the crate was lost. Crosbie Wells was not aware of the contents of the crate (five dresses with gold sewn into the hems) so there was no way he could identify the crate as his.
