Sounds a bit like this one:
The Bone Garden
Modern day woman digs up skull on her property which leads her to investigate who it belonged to, etc. Goes through a lot of documentation re the 1830s. At the same time there is also a linked 1830s storyline where we learn more about medicine at the time including about the resurrectionists. There is a fire at the 1830s docks towards the end of the book.

My girlfriend was telling me about reading a book before and I think she's crazy because I've done extensive research and can't find it at all...but she says it's about a lady that either found a diary in her house or dug one up on her property and it is written back in the 1800s and the diary talks about when doctors were digging up corpses to use for medical research for bloodletting, and she said towards the end their was a great fire, Chicago perhaps. I don't know for sure. It's been a while since she read it. She said it was an awesome book and I'd love to find it for her and get it for her as a gift. It's been bugging me to death since she told me about it and I've spent countless hours searching all over for it. Please help me find this book.
