Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates
or
The New Jim Crow,
Michelle Alexander.
I've been meaning to read both over the past couple years, but haven't read either. They both seem like good starting points. What do you think?
Hey Brooke! Whoohoo for suggestions :D
Between the World and Me taught me a hell of a lot. There's a lot to dig through with that one, and it's short enough that I think most people could get read and discuss most of the content in two months.
I haven't read The New Jim Crow. Love that idea!
I was going to suggest The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin... maybe we can make a list of suggested books and pick from them as we go? I'll look into how to do that.
Everyone, feel free to suggest more!

Great, thanks Kit!
I'm really interested in Pedagogy of the Oppressed; I hear it mentioned often.

We are currently looking for suggestions for our first book. Ideally it will be one that is accessible to everyone regardless of their prior experience with issues of race, meaning one that is fairly widely available and is not so dense as to discourage newcomers from engaging fully - we'll get to those later, I'm sure.
Feel free to interact in this forum or on the Facebook page, but I do intend Goodreads to be our main meeting point.

Let the group know any questions, comments, or suggestions you have. I look forward to getting started with you!
