SOLVED. Frankenstein thriller about genetics [s]

Trying to think of a cheesy thriller I read in the early 00's, about two biologist parents working for a shady megacorp. The father tampers with his unborn son's DNA, making him into a genius child but also evil. I think the Dad ends up killing the son? He definitely regrets the whole experiment. Maybe by one of those super prolific authors like Koontz or Grisham or something, though I've looked through those two specific wiki bibliographies and can't find anything.
