I think the murder takes place in the gym. The only other detail I remember is that the headmistress is planning to retire and the murder is not helping her make the final decision. Nor is she sure whom she will name to succeed her.

The story takes place in England, with a detective trying to solve the crime. I read it quite recently but it could be a rather old book.
