Alissa | 5 comments Hi everyone! My name’s Alissa and I’m from Philadelphia, Pa. Reading is a passion for me and an escape from my illness. I don’t know what I’d do without this love for books! My favorite genres are mystery (especially the old golden age mysteries), historical fiction (some very specific kinds of historical romance as well, mostly Eloisa James), sci-fi, time travel, horror, paranormal, fantasy, noir, and just plain strange! In fact, I’m very into the different genres and I think the things I like the least are the very realistic. Anne Rice is my favorite author and Harry Potter holds a very special place in my heart. I also love Agatha Christie and Patricia Wentworth. I’m currently re reading The Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, for the umpteenth time! I’ve recently discovered pulp fiction and have been enjoying the Race Williams series. I’m happy to be in the group, thanks! Sorry for the novel I’ve just written!

Regarding your last sentiment, don't feel too bad. I used to post almost literally the longest posts on message boards that you can imagine! and no, im not exaggerating. I once read someone else state that they lost the will to live while attempting to read all of one of my posts. Suffice to say, I've tried (not entirely successfully) to be more concise but I'm not great at it. In any case, your not the worst culprit!.

Though an avid reader, I had only been managing to get through about 10 mins a night before falling asleep!! Having joined a real life book club and a couple of online ones, is spurring me on to try gain some reading time back!
Have also just become a book fairy and looking forward to putting out my first one!

I'm Nicole, I'm 24, I study Visual Design and I love everything about books.
I mainly read classics, fantasy, novels, but I do not despise other genres like yellows or historians.
One of my favorite authors and Jane Austen. Being a student and spending most of my time at university and what is left to study at home I can not read as much as I would like, but I do not give up reading a handful of pages all the evenings. I've been a fairy book for 6 months and I love this project. In short this is me :)

message 477: by Meisje (new)

Meisje | 1 comments Salutations, book fairies!

My name is Meisje. I reside in the obnoxiously always sunny, sunny California. I do not live in the part that is beautiful and temperate with the ocean waves gently lapping at the shore; I live in what is called the Inland Empire also know as (at least in my head) the armpit of California, but some one on the tourist board has marketed it as the door way to Orange County in an effort to improve upon its desirability and respectability; and would you believe some people have bought into this rubbish and now suffice to say it’s a crowded armpit. I haven’t always lived in the armpit, thank God. I’ve traveled quite a bit, lived in London for about two years straight out of high school, and I move roughly every 3-4 years.
I love nonfiction that is narrative, quippy, and usually explores an interesting subject matter that most of us don’t run into in our daily life. Cartography, morticians, sled dogs, Icelandic slang words, just to name a few. I appreciate the classics and one of them is almost always in my rotation of books. Oooo history, I love history. I also adore literary nonsense and comic fantasies; “a year ago, last Thursday, as I was smelling the color purple...” think Lewis Carroll, T.S. Eliot, or if you’re musically inclined Flanders and Swann. I’m enamored with intellectual absurdities, dry humor, wit that walks into a room and slaps you in the face, but it’s so fantastically subtle you question you were even slapped, despite the glaring red mark.
There are a few genres I don’t read and any book meant to inspire you to get up and run is a definite no. Any book that won’t pair nicely with tea, coffee, or wine is out, and books where I can’t get comfortable while reading it; because let’s face it all books like to be read in a certain spot, sometimes hanging upside down off the side of your bed, and occasionally I meet a book who wishes to be read in a certain sprawled out manner that I find disagreeable. We try to push past the awkward, but usually we tip our hats and bid each other goodnight. Later I cringe and tell my friends all about it while glaring at the friend who made the ghastly mistake of setting us up in the first place. If you don’t think red wine pairs with some books and white wine pairs with others, or if you read books in a repetitive pattern of rigidity, like always sitting in a chair, then perhaps my recommendation of books might not suite.
To wrap up this lengthy introduction let me just say, I am thrilled to be here and also thrilled to be a fairy. A long held childhood dream of being a fairy is now realized and I think being a book fairy is going to be the best kind.

hey Laura this is a short story I wrote

Into the Forest

13 year old Jackie sat in bed braiding her long wavy hair. She stood up and opened her window to admire the crescent moon. Her eyes that were black as coal saw a beautiful owl she was very surprised and fell back.
“Hoot Hoot!” cried the owl
“Some one help me please,”screamed a female voice between sobs.
“Shut up,” answered another voice!
Jackie opened her eyes and saw that she was in a creepy, dark, and odd looking forest, a full moon hung from the sky and that was the only light. Jackie was confused because she could have sworn there was a full moon. Jackie heard more screams and tried to move. Jackie looked across the darkness and saw a body. It was stabbed and was left on the floor. Jackie noticed that the body had a scar on her stomach.
Jackie opened her eyes and noticed she was in her bedroom again.
“Jackie,Jackie, are you alright what was that noise did you fall,” asked her mother.
“Yes mom I just fell but i'm fine, I think I had a bad dream. I’m going to go back tp sleep. Good night,” answered Jackie.

Jackie sat on her bed scared she didn't know what had just happened. She tried to convince herself it was just her imagination or that she had somehow fallen asleep and it was just a dream. Every night Jackie kept seeing the scene over and over until one day she decided she would tell her parents even if they made her go to therapy.

It was a warm, sunny Sunday morning, the birds were chirping. Jackie’s mom could be heard talking and dad was cooking breakfast. Jackie couldn’t take it anymore, she had to tell someone. Finally decided to tell mom and dad what she had seen. She didn’t tell her parents right away because she was afraid that her parents would laugh at her.
Jackie said, “Mom and dad I have been seeing things and I don’t know if this was a dream or not.”
“OK sweety tell us,” Jackie’s mom replied.
Jackie said, “Well I was in a forest when I heard a sound and I found a body, I don’t know if it’s dead?”
Mom and dad were surprised about what she had seen. Then, her dad said, "Do you at least know who the body was?"
Jackie was frustrated because she was not able to identify who that body was. Mom did not believe Jackie. A few seconds later mom said, "Oh honey, the only reason you have this kind of dreams is that you, missy, watch way too many horror movies. There is nothing you should worry about, OK?”
Jackie was not very happy with the comment her mom made. Jackie said in a sarcastic voice, "OK mom if you say so.”
“Come on, cheer up your dad cooked your favorite breakfast," Mom added.

Later that day, around 3:00, Jackie invited her friends to come and hang out by the pool. That's when Jackie saw her friend Evie. Evie is a 14-year-old, with light skin, she has light brown eyes, and she has long and straight multi color hair. Jackie and Evie we're talking,“So what type of dog do you want to get?” Evie asked.
Jackie said, “I don’t know.”
Evie noticed that Jackie was very distracted. “Are you ok you seem a little off?” Evie asked.
Jackie replied, “Um, what, oh I’m fine.”
“I’m going to go put on my swimsuit.” Evie said.
Jackie answered, “OK.”
Meanwhile, as Jackie was waiting for Evie, Jackie had a flashback about the vision. When Evie came back, Jackie notice a familiar looking mark on Evie’s stomach. Jackie was in the pool with Evie and her friends. Finally, the fun had to stop because it was very late and the girls had school the next day.

That night, there was a beautiful crescent moon. As Jackie braided her hair she kept trying to remember where she had seen the mark on Evie’s stomach. Jackie kept pacing, saying “Where have I seen those marks, where, where?”
Then, it hit Jackie!
She exclaimed, “The marks! The marks are from my vision, that’s where I saw them! It must mean Evie was the body I saw! I have to warn Evie!”
Jackie ran to go get her phone, and she tripped over a pair shoes, Jackie looked at the shoes, They were Evie’s . Jackie was so confused, so she decided to call Evie’s house, but no one answered. She was struck with terror. Jackie was shaking. Jackie called Evie.
“Hello” said Evie.
“Ah E- eevie whe where are YOU!!!” Jackie stuttered.
“My family and I are going to a forest. It looks very creepy and dark. Oh there is also a full moon,” Evie said in a very happy voice.
It was then that Jackie knew! Everything was the same as her dreams!
Evie was the girl that died and she was going to die today if Jackie didn't stop it. Jackie grabbed her phone and ran down stairs
“Mom dad she going to die,” Jackie screamed!
“Who is going to die?” her dad questioned,
“Evie, Evie is going to die like I saw it, Mom we need to help her!”
“Jackie you need to see a doctor calm down!” her mother said sternly but Jackie ran out the door hoping to get there on time.
“Hoot,Hoot,” cried the owl.
She remembered that hooting. Jackie said “I hope I make it in time”
As she ran towards the forest.

I'm Fred from the gloomy London.
This is my first time joining a book club so I am actually a bit intimidated. I decided to join in when I saw the current book you're all reading....I've always wanted to read Never Let Me Go so now I have a good reason to finally pick it up.
I'm not a fan of horrors and thrillers but I'm open to try all kind of books if given good recommendations.
I'm looking forward to chatting with you all!

Oh and I hope you had a great Easter :)

Dawn (goodreadscomdawn_irena) | 3 comments May 2, 2018

Hey y'all ~ That is how we say hello in the Southern part of the USA! My name is Dawn and I live in Oxford, Mississippi! I am living and breathing in the same area as many other great authors before me and many great authors at present and many great authors to come!
William Faulkner the author of my favorites The Light in August, The Sound and Fury, and As I Lay Dying and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 lived here all his life in his beautiful home of Rowan Oak!

Currently, we have had John Grisham, Greg Ilies, Ace Atkins, William Boyle, Julie Cantrell, Beth Anne Fennelly, Tom Franklin, and so many more writers publishing books from this area.

We were recently voted the #1 Best College Town to live in with the University of Mississippi and my Alumni right here where I live and work!

I am also so proud of our Square Books being voted as #1 Best Independent Southern Bookstore the last two years.

I suppose we Southerners do know how to talk big and tell good stories. That is what my Uncle Bobby always says. So sorry if it sounds like I am bragging too much. That Southern Pride thing is really right.

I am so anxious to meet all of you and very humbled to be a part of this charitable group. Reading has always meant so much to me. I am glad to see so many that feel the same way.
Dawn
