Michael Guillebeau | 3 comments I apologize for a somewhat off-the-wall question, and I hope this is not in the wrong place. I’m an author who’s going to take half the money from my next book and start a small fund for librarians, and I don’t know how to do this in a way that’s useful to libraries and librarians. I'm hoping the librarians in here can give me some advice.

The total fund will be small, somewhere between a few thousand dollars and a few tens of thousands (based on my previous books) so each grant will probably be small, initially in the range of $100. But I would like to support librarians trying innovative things, and give librarians a forum to talk about what unlimited libraries could do if we all dreamed big. I’ve opened an initial site, madlibrarian.org, and proposed setting up the site as a place where a librarian could come, post a request for something like $100 (Most of the librarians I’ve talked to sometimes pay for things out of their own pocket), get a reply in a day or two, with money in a personal PayPal account in a few days. The only bureaucracy I’d want is for them to come back at some point and tell the readers the results.

Does this make sense to you? Is there something better I should do? Is there anything that makes sense in terms of working with you guys? Really, I just want to get money to innovative librarians, and I’m struggling with the best way to do it.

I’d appreciate any comments. And if you can think of any opinionated library-types to pass this along to, I’d appreciate that.

lethe | 16359 comments Goodreads librarians are not actual librarians (although some of us are), but volunteer Goodreads users who help out keeping/making the database as correct as possible.

It sounds like this is an initiative for American librarians. Maybe you could contact the ALA (American Library Association) or something?

Elizabeth (Alaska) US libraries are tax supported. However, most communities have a Friends of the Library. You might see if there is one in your area.
