LOL! I said that.

I think the circumstances are different. They were forced to bring Mandy and Jemmy through because of the heart condition. It was the only way to save her life. But it was violent and painful to walk through the stones. Claire said it was like being ripped apart and then put back together. They said that the kids had nightmares afterwards and that Jemmy was terrified of that feeling. There is no way Claire would have subjected Bree to that by choice.

Hi Sharonh...That is just how i see Jamie,as you just described him. Ruggedly handsome, big guy, attractive, and with a nice personality and good sense of humor, etc etc etc...Claire is a very lucky woman to be loved by a man like Jamie. And to top it off is 'faithful' to her.

message 555: by Sharonh (new)

Sharonh | 472 comments Teresita...absolutely! Claire is one lucky woman!

I too hate it that Jamie and Claire lost twenty years, but it is part of the story. And as far as lamenting that now they are "old", maybe what the story is telling us is that "old" does not mean love, touching, desire, and all the love really is must fade away with advancing years. I admit that I am a grandmother, but perhaps it is a message in itself. If those of us who are not in our twenties can identify with the love and passion of young Jamie and Claire then perhaps readers in their twenties should appreciate what comes with time - Jamie did. Just food for thought.

Thank you Terry!!! You've expresssed exactly how I feel as well and I couldn't have said it better!

Hi Claudia, I agree with you and Terry on that...Just goes to show love does not care your age or anything...that is one of the things that makes this story so special. Their love is so strong I can almost feel it. I think most of us would love to find a love theirs or a man like Jamie Fraser. I kmow I would.

message 558: by Sara (new)

Sara (saragr) | 96 comments Hey guys, this is an old thread and I didn't read all the previous pages but I have to say, besides the obvious baddies, Bree is my least favorite character. Or well, she was in the beginning but she somewhat grew on me. For basically the same reasons you guys said(on the first page, lol) and the fact that she didn't tell anybody, or most importantly Jamie, about Stephen Bonnet at first. I can't stand when people don't say what they mean or leave out major important information like she did. I get why she would be scared to say something, I really do, but look what happened to Roger bc of it!

Someone mentioned Frank and I admit I agree. He had his moments where I didn't like him but I also felt sorry for him too.

message 559: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments I may be getting myself in trouble... my least favorite character is Lord John. I just don't have a connection to him and it has nothing to do with his sexual orientation. Might be when I compare him to Jamie and he just falls short.

message 560: by HeatherJay (new)

HeatherJay | 7 comments Leea wrote: "I may be getting myself in trouble... my least favorite character is Lord John. I just don't have a connection to him and it has nothing to do with his sexual orientation. Might be when I compare..."

Agreed! It's not that I don't like him, he just pales in comparison to a majority of the other characters and he certainly isn't interesting enough to merit his own books. Yawn!!!

message 561: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments I feel the same about Lord John he has his moments but over all is not too exciting for me and the LJ books are just OK to me. He is not the least fav character for me though I am thinking Frank especially with all the cheating which started before Clair fell through the stones. It was hard for me to see what she saw in him at all and totally can see why she did not want to go back,

message 562: by [deleted user] (new)

I concur about LJG. I was slowly warming up to him, more because Jamie likes him so much, but after reading the LJG books I like him even less. I feel he does a lot more from a sense of honour than heart... of course this does not apply to his longing for Jamie and I am only shocked at Claire's decission on Echo.

Well if we are being unpopular then I have to pick Jenny. Although I greatly empathise with her I do not like her methods and the fact she always thinks she knows best. Her pride I find to be very hard to get over as she hurts the people around her. I do see the good in her and the strength but I find she irritates me a lot.

Sara I had the same with Bree but like you she grew on me on the second read through :)

message 563: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 21 comments For me, most of the characters have their endearing moments :-) but I wasn't crazy about Bree in the beginning. I think after she went through the stones she was interacting with such strong characters that I liked better so I don't think she had a chance to shine plus she made some poor choices. After reading Echo I came to appreciate her personality and relationship with Roger SO much more. I think Bree came into her own.

Then there's Lord John and I may be in the minority but I love his character. I appreciate his sense of honor and his sense of humor- both give him heart! His series is different from Outlander but I enjoy the intrigue and his ability to solve his current dilemma. Anyway, looking forward to The Scottish Prisoner to get both Lord John and Jamie's perspective...especially Jamie's perspective!

message 564: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments This is exactly why we cleaned up the threads so that gems like this one would pop back up from being buried. I really enjoyed this thread.

I'm sure I said this before, but there are very few characters in this series that I dislike. Even the ones that are 'bad' usually have something redeeming about them at least a little bit. Jenny is absolutely stubborn and thinks she knows best, but without Jenny both Ian and Jamie would have died. Everyone has faults, and that's what makes me love them all so much.

The only character that I hated, that I can't find anything about him that makes me relate to him at all, is Harley Boble. And that's probably because he wasn't written with much depth. Even BJR and Loaghaire had things about them I could relate too.

message 565: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments All the characters, good, bad, idifferent make the stories so much more real to me. There are some characters I really didn't like, like Harley Boble. Would the stories have been just fine without characters like Boble? Who knows.
Like you, Wendy, I found all the characters very interesting.

message 566: by Sara (new)

Sara (saragr) | 96 comments Hi Caroline, nice to see you over here :)

Actually, I can identify with everyone's feelings on the least fav characters. Jenny is another one I forgot to mention & when Lord John was first introduced I wasn't sure about him. But as I got further into the series, I started to really like him.

Oh dear, I can't for the life of me, remember who Harley Boble is?

But who knows, maybe this will change when I do my second read of the series.

message 567: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Harley Boble was introduced, I believe, in FC, during the festival. He was brought back in ABOSAA when Claire was kidnapped.

message 568: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments Yep, I'm not sure how far you read but Boble was in both books.

Please remember to spoiler tag anything that newer group members haven't read yet. I know none of us are used to it, lol.

*********SPOILERS.. ****

Hello Sara, ditto :)

I agree that Jenny's iron will kept these wonderful men alive. It is after Claire's return I find her so difficult and I am not sure about her placement at the end of Echo.

I do agree all the characters are adding wonderful colours to this rich tapestry and I would not part with a single one. However, it does not mean I like them all very much:) Infact on reflection I probably had more of a problem with Malva Christie than Jenny. What a bisom. I always loved the Geyllis Duncan time though, she was so deliciously bad and up front like Bonnet. Complete libertines who enjoyed what they did.

message 570: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments I will say Lord John is a loyal friend to Jamie. That's one of the qualities that I will always love about him and it sounds like he was a great father to William. I can't wait to learn more about Williams character in the next book.

message 571: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I'm pretty intrigued by William too. Plus I like noting the similarties and differences between him and Jamie.

Especially looking at them compared to Ian. Like Jamie was a second father to Ian, and you can see a LOT of Jamie's personality in Ian, with Ian Sr's temperament. Where as William has Jamie's temperament but not puch of his tendencies. He gets that from LJ. It's so interesting.

message 572: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments I also find that interesting, plus I wonder if DG will focus more on William and Ian as the books come to a close (tear) and maybe have a spinn off with them.

message 573: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I really really hope so!

message 574: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments Finger crossed ;)

message 575: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes they are interesting in their differences and similarities, but if you throw Bri into the mix William makes more sense. Especially as they both have headstrong mothers.

Bri like William grew up as an only child and very privaliged compared to Ian who grew up hand to mouth during the war and the horrendous after math as the baby of happy brood of children on a farm. He and Jamie knew how to endure hardship and both lived very similar lives growing up in Lallybroch with two loving parents. Their expectations would be close to.

I too am enjoying this younger generation and I adore Ian time always.

message 576: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments You are so right about that. When you add that into everything then you're right, William and Bree have very simlilar tendencies.

Tina | 162 comments Just finished ABOSAA and I have to say I dont' like the Bugs. (view spoiler) :(

Thanks, Tina! We just don't want someone to see this before they have finished ABOSAA.

message 579: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I always liked the Bugs. I don't know, I guess it's true that I tend to like everyone, haha.

message 580: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked the Bugs too. It was an interesting path they took.

message 581: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Yeah the Bugs were a surprise to me. Although there are redeeming qualities to all characters there are a few I don't care for.

message 582: by Carol L (new)

Carol L | 218 comments I love how DG allows us to see characters develop and change, not just Claire and Jamie. The Bugs are a case in point. As are many others. I see no redeeming qualities in Stephen Bonnet. I continue to be ambivelant about LJG; love him and then.....

message 583: by [deleted user] (new)

Stepehen Bonnet is complicated himself. Hard man raised in hard times. Never wants to be poor. His "relationship" with a certain lady was very confusing. One minute he was the worst of libertines and the next a hero and then even worse again. He seems a female Geillis, I wondered if they were related. You never knew what was next but that you could not trust them.

message 584: by Carol L (new)

Carol L | 218 comments I follow your line of thought Caroline, but still nothing redemptive at all. Complicated, but awful. And more than likely related to Geillis and Roger.

message 585: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments I agree about Bonnet but as a character he moves the plot along and whenever he is in the picture you know something interesting is going to happen. I never thought about Bonnet being related to Geillis and
Roger but he could be Geillis' great great great grandfather or something ( lord knows he likes to plant his seed all over) he has the green eyes like they do. That could mean that he may be able to go through the stones also... Interesting thought.

message 586: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 26, 2011 08:01AM) (new)

Yes so right the plot gambles along when Bonnet shows up. The constant reference to the green eyes got me wondering along with his resemblance to Roger and his temprement. Although it may have all been a ruse for the earlier plot of getting Roger disposed of. Poor Roger, it's bad enough having Geillis and the other chap (no names for now) but SB too, how would he go on?!

message 587: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments The only exception to the rule of Bonnet being related to Geillis is that Bonnet is Irish, not Scottish. But who knows?

message 588: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments its not like Scottland and Ireland are that far apart and very conceivable that somebody may relocate for whatever reason. That would be an interesting plot twist. This series could go on and on and never end with these posibilities (thats what I'd hope for any way)

message 589: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Nov 26, 2011 09:07AM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments I really don't want Geillis and Bonnet to be related b/c that would just be too many coincidences in this series. We have enough people (not)surprisingly related/connected and we don't need any more, imo.

I just want him to be a baddie, plain and simple.

message 590: by Marietta (new)

Marietta | 63 comments I unliked Jennie, I didn't like Gillis. Of course we hate Black Jack Randall. I love Lord John. You will love him even more if you read his books. They are nothing like the Outlander books so don't get your hopes up, but they develop his character. He is one hot gay soldier. Very romantic character and good father to William.

message 591: by Carol L (new)

Carol L | 218 comments I have read his books (the newest will be on my doorstop Nov 29th) and still waffle. The end of Echo put me off a bit, again. Mostly I love him

message 592: by [deleted user] (new)

Also if Bonnet never claimed the child, it's ma was Scottish it could easily grow up there. Yes endless evil possibilities and stone enterring could occur.

message 593: by Deena (new)

Deena | 175 comments Hmm it's hard to choose a least fav character, I actually pitied black jack at times, I also felt bad for laoghaire. It seems like she had a crush on Jamie for a large part of her life and he obviously never felt the same way, I think William is my least favorite, it's not that I dislike him I just find him a bit dull, especially when I compare him to Ian (def not dull). He's a nice guy, I just don't like reading about him.

message 594: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I had a hard time find a least favorite character, too. I felt bad for all of the at times.

message 595: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Ok, least favorite and there are no redeeming qualities in him is...Harley Boble.

message 596: by Gwennie, biblioholic (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 3151 comments I agree with you completely Jen! I think I mentioned that before, that he would be the one I like least.
