I read Storm Front for magical realism. I finished this book on 10/9 and give it five stars. It was a lot of fun to read and I am glad I choose it. I really liked the main character and the way he is trying so hard to be a good wizard, even though he is tempted to be a bad one. I liked the way he laughed at himself.
Title/Author: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Shelf: Science Fiction
Read: 10/12/2017
Rating: ★★★
Tahereh Mafi has a way of describing things that's just plain beautiful. Earlier this year, Sophia & I read her middle-grade book, Furthermore, it was magical.
I thought that the idea of this story sounded pretty interesting - killing with a touch. Honestly, I could have done without the romance. I just didn't care about Adam. Plus, I kept thinking of Peta when I read the parts with him. For me, there were a lot of moments like that where I thought, "This part is so Delirium" or "This part is totally Divergent". If I had read this when it came out I probably would have loved it. Like, five-star-loved-it ... especially that purple suit!
Anyway, there was a time when I couldn't get enough of dystopian YA. Not so much anymore.

review: After successfully blackmailing The Chairman last book, things aren't going so well for Nate and Nadia. Nadia has been sent to an "executive retreat" to avoid the press and Nate is being blackmailed into a new wedding arrangement. Then there are more surprises and no real resolution (which is to be expected of the second book of a trilogy).
I should have my book finished today. I had planned on finishing it last night but ended up with a migraine, so I went to bed instead lol.
Science Fiction
Read: 10/17/17
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review
I can't really put my finger on why I think this is a 3.5 star book as opposed to 4. I was on the edge of my seat towards the end, and I enjoyed most of the book, but it just felt like something was missing to give it that extra bump to 4 stars. Again, I liked it; I just wasn't blown away by it. I really wish I could be more specific than that lol. That being said, I will be reading the next one out of curiosity to see where it goes from here.
Hey, Nici! Hope you are doing okay! Do you have an update on your Sci-Fi book? Fingers crossed that they will call PN Mystery this week FTW! We have to have all our shelves completed to win - I'll request our Sci-Fi stamp as soon as you post your review. Yay!! We're so close!!
I am looking at Welcome to Night Vale ... I used to listen to the podcast so if this is just a transcription of that, I'll switch to something else ... Also considering Alice but I'm not super crazy about reading another YA book so soon.
I'm actually going to use Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. I need a "book of poetry in translation on a theme other than love" for my Read Harder Challenge. (I only have 2 items left!) Since this was published in 2015, it will work for both.
I'm going with
. I'm currently plodding my way through a review book, but if I don't have that finished by Saturday, I'll switch to this one so I can have it done by next shelf call (providing team 16 doesn't win before that). I'm sure I'll certainly enjoy this one more than the review book I'm currently reading lol.
Title/Author: Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur
Shelf: Published 2015
Read: 10/19/2017
Rating: ★★★★
I think that it's important to remember when reading Milk and Honey, that the author was 21 when she wrote this. I think, at that age, it's so hard to see past the "right now". Some parts are dripping with the angst and shock therapy that often comes with spoken word poetry. Don't get me wrong, horrible things happen to her. She should be outraged. We all should be.
Of the four collections, The Healing was my favorite. I also really liked this passage:
“we are all born
so beautiful
the greatest tragedy is
being convinced we are not”
I finished my sci fi book on 10/17 and give it 4 stars. The book was called Unwind Really interesting book with a messed up premise. The idea that someone could give a child up for parts is so crazy to me. Really interesting book and very different then what I would normally read. Well written though and I would read another in the series.

Title/Author: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
Shelf: Magical Realism
Read: 10/11/2017
Rating: ★★
Carry On was really difficult for me to get through. I wasn't really invested in this story until the 2nd half of the book - which totally surprised me. I love everything that Rainbow Rowell writes.
Things that I liked:
- Baz & Simon K-I-S-S-I-N-G
- Baz & Simon investigating Natasha Grimm-Pitch's murder
- Baz (all the things)
Things that I didn't like:
- Pretty much everything else
