Melissa Davis | 790 comments ... Sandra/Nici same person??? I'm confused ....

message 52: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Melissa, as a Mod, I was helping you out, as Nici was on her phone & you hadn't added that book to the master list.

Her other book was added so I thought you might have had trouble finding this one, so I posted it for you to see which book she wanted.

message 53: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yep - I see what happened ... I must have been editing the list to add her freebie when she posted her free space & missed it. Thanks for pointing it out!

And thanks for clearing up my confusion! It was waaaayyyy past my bedtime to put together Sandra=MOD ... my brain decided that we had 5 players. Sorry about that! I promise not to type past 10 pm anymore!

Spider’s Revenge by Jennifer Estep 8/10/17 (★★★★★)

Spider’s Revenge (Elemental Assassin, #5) by Jennifer Estep Book 5 is the best one yet. I would be totally happy if the series ended here. I am really tempted to stop at book 5 and pretend like the rest of the books don't exist. (I don't know if I can take another book where a quarter of the story is spent telling me things I already know/don't care about.)

I loved Jojo opening up and sharing info, I really liked the Fletcher scene, I liked getting more background on Sophia, I liked the inevitable collision of Bria & Finn. I liked Gentry and Sydney - I would be interested to read books about them. (view spoiler)

message 56: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I'm glad you enjoyed Spider’s Revenge (Elemental Assassin, #5) by Jennifer Estep ! I think the amount of repetition has lessened in the later books, but it's also entirely possible that I've just stopped paying attention to it lol. I still love the series! :)

message 57: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments I do really enjoy that actual story. I even like Gin most of the time. I really like how much action there is and how fast faced they are. I'm sure I'll pick up book 6 sooner rather than later. (view spoiler)

message 58: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments The recap thing never bothered me. Maybe because I was reading them as they came out and had forgotten by then?

I also never noticed she tends to write everyone's last name most of the time. It was pointed out in a challenge.

message 59: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I don't think I ever noticed the last name thing either. Now I probably will lol.

Zombie, Inc. (Zombie Inc, #1) by Christine Dougherty

Read: 8/11/17
Rating: 4 stars

Review

For some reason, I thought this was going to be a lighthearted read. Not so much lol. Once I switched my mindset over, though, I was pleasantly surprised. I was easily drawn into the world and found myself reading as quickly as possible to find out what would happen next and how it all would end. I really enjoyed the snippets from the ZI employee handbook that began most every chapter. They gave a nice setup for what I would be experiencing in the coming pages.

All in all, a great find for a freebie. I'm going to be checking out more by this author!

Texas Gothic (Goodnight Family #1) by Rosemary Clement-Moore
finished: 8/12/17
rating: 4 stars

review: YA ghost story. Sisters Amy and Phin are ranch sitting for their aunt and get pulled into a local ghost story at the neighboring ranch. Since the entire Goodnight family has "paranormal" abilities it isn't a stretch, although Amy has been ignoring hers for years. I really liked all the characters and the romance was sweet, even though they spent a lot of time snarking at each other.

Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis 8/13/17 (★★★)

Prince of Wolves (The Grey Wolves, #1) by Quinn Loftis Meh, I could take or leave this one. Story started out good. I like that Fane's wolf instinctively knew where to find his mate but I thought it was strange that other wolves didn't seem to have the same luck ... having to wait hundreds of years to find theirs. (Maybe this is explained by Fane's uber-alpha heritage???) I liked that Lilly and Jacque seemed to be something more than human but it wasn't explored further which was disappointing. I liked that Jacque, Jen, and Sally were super close and really good friends to each other but the commentary was too much. No one talks like that all the time. I really liked that the mating marks appeared on both Fane and Jacque. I totally did not get why some 22 year old guy thought he had any type of claim on a minor that he'd never met. I kept waiting for there to be some kind of connection to Trent that would reveal why Trent bailed on Jacque but it never came. And I couldn't figure out why Steele continued his claim when he saw Jacque's marks indicating that she clearly wasn't his mate. I did like how the fight played out and even though I probably should have, I didn't see it coming. Not bad for a freebie book but I doubt that I will continue the series.

Crux (Southern Arcana, #1) by Moira Rogers
finished: 8/13/17
stars: 3

review: Mackenzie is on the run from a "crazy" stalker when she meets PI Jackson and learns about the supernatural world that she is part of. I really enjoyed all the characters and this book had an actual ending even though it is the beginning of a series. The story was interesting and I'm anxious to learn more about Seers.

Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark #7) by Kresley Cole (SOS bookshelf)

Read: 8/13/17
Rating: 4 stars

Review

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. When I initially read the description, it didn't sound that intriguing to me, but I was immediately swept away by the prologue and immediately didn't want to put the book down. I loved Sabine as the heroine, with her snarkiness, and Rydstrom was a great leading man as well. I definitely enjoyed it more than the last one, and am looking forward to continuing the series.

message 65: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yeah! We got lots of reading done this weekend!

Diane - both of your picks sound intriguing. I am going to have to check them out!

Steph - I loved Sabine, too. The IAD series is one of my favorites!

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments I have finished reading Blood Debts for free spot. I actually enjoyed this book more then I thought I would. It is the second in the series and it addressed some of the issues I had in the first one, such as how the main character is a billionaire with a bunch of magical power and he is hot with great friends. LOL felt very unrealistic. In this book he loses his money, his power and his friends. Oh and gets beat up a lot so he doesn't look too good. I give this four stars. finished 8/14/17

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Nici wrote: "I have read most of this series when I was desperate to find something to read. Can't say I loved it but have read more than one lol."

Are any of my questions answered in later books? Like what's the deal with Lilly & Jacque? Was Trent strong armed into backing off immediately after telling Jacque that he loved her?

message 70: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Sorry for the false alarm on the stamp request! I was double checking our choices and found that Nici's book isn't on any of the Free Space shelf options. The app threw her off. She's going to pick something else.

message 71: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Oh, that stinks. :( Good luck picking a new one, Nici! I hope it ends up being a good read!

We're still doing an awesome job, ladies! I'm anxious for the new shelf call. I'm biding my time by reading some short stories in Blood in Her Veins Nineteen Stories from the World of Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter . Short stories aren't always my thing, but I'm liking these so far.

Melissa Davis | 790 comments I've been re-reading the HP books with my daughter ... just finished Goblet of Fire. I really just love these books more and more every time I read them. It's a toss up between this one and Half-Blood Prince for my favorite.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter #4) by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) by J.K. Rowling

Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter I've been reading the 1st book in the Jane Yellowrock series. I reaaaallllyy like it but I've had so many other books going at the same time that it's taking me forever to finish. I'm hoping that this will turn out to be my next favorite series ...

Certain Dark Things by Silvia Moreno-Garcia I'm also reading Certain Dark Things, a stand alone, for the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge. It's a really interesting vampire story ... the MC is this kind of Aztec/part bird vampire. There's all different types ... it's really keeping me captivated.

Steph Ann | 1220 comments Love the Jane Yellowrock series! It got off to a slow start for me, but by book 3, I was hooked!

I can't wait til my kids are old enough to read Harry Potter! I would love to share the joy of reading that with them! :-)

Nici (queennici102) | 697 comments I finished Stained (Stained, #1) by Ella James on 8/15 and give it three and a half stars. I had a hard time with this book because I felt that there was not enough world building and that it was often confusing. I think there was a lot of potential but didn't live up to it. This was for the free kindle shelf.

From Origins (Descendant Prophecies, #3) by Mary Ting
finished: 8/19/17
stars: 4

review: This series has stayed fresh and interesting by having major plot points wrapped up each book but then introducing new ones towards the end. The gang is doing a mission for Hephaestus to save Sky's parents, but as usual they learn more and the plot keeps twisting. (view spoiler)

message 90: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Yeah! Stamp request! Woo hoo!

I am choosing Vision in Silver (#3 of The Others) by Anne Bishop. It was the only one of my picks that my library had both audio and ebook available so I can finish fast. I will update the list tomorrow.

message 91: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Davis | 790 comments Diane, your book sounds interesting! I really like mythology - any type. I will definitely check that series out.

message 92: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 913 comments @ Melissa - I'd recommend the series. I also love mythology, although Greek is my preference. We'll have to compare favorites sometime.

Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop 8/22/17 (★★★)

Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop
This installment of The Other's series was only okay. It felt like the whole purpose was to build things up for the next book. There are a few prophecies and stuff happens but there's no satisfaction of a big danger resolved. (Idk, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this one.) (view spoiler)

message 98: by Steph Ann (new)
