Right up my street with it being set in Greece and had a bit of history and mythology and culture in it. Highly recomended.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

John | 7 comments The Roads Chosen

Chapter 1 (page 1 - I think) A young boy contracts polio: his mother says, "Blessed. Saved from the military."

Hooked. I could not put it down.

Crazy. My mom told me the one thing her mother was frightened of was polio. All these people fighting against vaccination should've lived through that. My mother said the mothers then wouldn't have cared if it were still experimental. They would have marched through hell itself to get it for their kids.

John | 7 comments And why the mother's statement shocked me. It is a seed planted, that grows into a sturdy vine as the story unfolds. And, by the end of the book one can understand why a mother from those parts, during that time, would say such a thing.

My dad was the same way. Several people I knew growing up survived polio, but they were crippled for life. There was never any discussion about whether we wanted to be vaccinated. That opening line would get my attention still today. Guess I'm telling my age.

message 61: by Barbara (new)

Barbara On the recommendation of a writer who is on GR and a few other socials, I got a copy of a book written in the 70s (I think it was made into a TV movie) called "Harvest Home." The descriptions of "Blood Harvest" make it sound very similar.

message 63: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I am almost finished with a new Sherlock Holmes book called "Hidden Fires: A Holmes Before Baker Street Adventure." There is a short opening prologue, Watson is writing about a dramatic and revealing case Holmes has just told him about, one that occurred before they met, and the prologue ends with Watson trying to decide "What ought I to do? I cannot leave it where it lies. I cannot toss it in the fire."
That's some bait.

Crisman Strunk | 9 comments I think "The Last Good Kiss" has the best opening line of any thriller I've read. I've read that James Crumley spent more time crafting the opening line than the rest of the book. I don't know of the veracity of that, but it's a great opening line.

Valerie Book Valkyrie Most Stephen King novels.

Devi (views_she_writes) | 143 comments Recently read A Most Puzzling Murder by Bianca Marais and I need to talk about it!
I’m a sucker for mysteries that do something a little different, and this one hit the sweet spot between cozy, clever, and completely unputdownable.
If you love solving clues alongside the characters, A Most Puzzling Murder by Bianca Marais might just be your next obsession. It’s smart, funny, and even a little interactive (yes, you can email for clues + bonus content!).
I posted my full review on https://viewsshewrites.wordpress.com/... — come check it out if you're curious!
