SOLVED. Historic fantasy(?) Irish Bard series. [s]

I'm looking for a series about an Irish Bard. I read the book in the mid 90's but I think they're older than that. At least 3 or 4 books (that I knew about). I seem to recall the books being called 'Bard I', 'Bard II', 'Bard III', 'Bard IV', but they might have individual titles.

I think the books were set around the time the Romans were invading the (now) western Europian area, I seem to recall the bard being facinated by the roads they were building. The books follow the bard on his travels around the Europian area gathering stories. He may have been blessed or cursed by one of the Celtic/Gaelic deities.

In one of the books he travels with a crew of pirates, whose captain was a woman. I seem to recall that although she wasn't a big fan of the raping part, she had the attitude of, she allows the men to do it because it allows her to keep controll, the crew might mutiny otherwise.

In one of the later books (I think), he's gone back to Eire & the area he came from but finds it a bit stifling. He may have a confrontation with the deity that favoured him.

Does anyone know these books? I've been trying to find them for about 20 years now.
