SO LET US BEGIN!
This month's books belong to Dorothy Clark, Jan Drexler, Gabrielle Meyer and Me! These ladies will be dropping in to chat and to talk about their books. Gabrielle is on vacation so she will just drop in when she has internet.
Are the books this month!
My book is #4 in my Wilderness Brides series. And it features twin sister mail order brides!
What do you think is the allure of the Mail Order Bride story?
BTW, today Naomi Rawlings (another LIH author) is coming for a visit with her husband (a handsome hunk--but I am a happily married woman so I'll just enjoy having him around today '-)
and three great kids. We live on a lake in northern WI so we'll be cooking out and then taking a boat ride and we hope swimming. So I'll be around this morning and late this afternoon, but will be having fun with Naomi in between! (Naomi lives about 2 hours north along the shore of Lk Superior!)
And as always there will be prizes. I will give away an ebook copy of my LIH and a print copy (US Only) to one to one member and another to another this week.
AND WHY NOT INVITE A FRIEND TO JOIN THE FUN???

Now, to get to your question. I'm drawn to Mail Order Bride stories partly because I don't think it's something I could ever have done. I know in reality things were not exactly like we read in books but the books give me hope that maybe some women did find love being a mail order brides.
I also think it is sad that for many of those women, there was no other option. I'm so thankful that there are options for women today.
I'm also thankful for the authors that write the stories I love.

To answer your question... I enjoy mail-order bride-stories because they can be twisted in so many different directions. As a writer I love doing that! As a reader, I love reading how other writers have done it.

Very astute analysis, Andrea. I also think that in the early centuries the roles of husband and wife were very prescribed and oftcn couples just stuck to what was required of them and hoped for respect and affection. But you're right women had very few options before 1960--it's hard to believe it's that recent!

Wow, Amanda! Congratulations!

I really admire the courage of these women and all of those who packed up their families and went west with their husbands. I'm a true coward at heart. Perhaps that's why I enjoy writing these types of stories so much. I can make my heroines as brave as I want!

Don't enter me for the draw as unless the author has a pdf of the book I can't read it because Mill's and Boon have the rights in Australia and we can't get the ebooks here that easy. Also postage is to much to send here. the only way to send books cheap is via book depository. I am also having surgery in Sept on my shoulder so holding a book will be almost impossible.
I like mail order bride stories because I think the women were brave to go to meet someone they didn't really know. I have a penpal who met her husband through letters. They wrote for about a year and then meet and he moved to where she lives and have been married for probably more than 25 years now. Its also interesting reading how some of the women would come all that way only to find the writer had lied.
In letters you often can get an idea of what a person is like but there are people who will write what you want to hear. This happened to me I had a pen pal who loved things I did and mentioned other things she liked but they were just likes till we meet and I found she was into them almost to cult status and it was actually a relief when I had to leave early. This was about 25 years ago before internet but we had phones etc.
Back in the mail order bride era mail would be slow and probably not many and often the brides would be desperate to leave a bad situation so wouldn't have the time to get to know a person as well as we can now.
(I am off to hospital for the day another lignocaine infusion for my pain)

I'm sorry that mail order bride real life story didn't turn out well. And about the twins--have no idea but I thought it was intriguing way to start the story.

Thanks, Valri. I loved Kurt and Ellen too. Yes, marriage was much different--often just a division of labor. I don't think any of us would have enjoyed being women in the 19thc--so little respect for women--even though we were indispensable!!!

It wasn't so much she was in a cult but she was into something to the point they would go to meetings and have chapters, also a movie of the franchise had been out less than 2 weeks and they had seen it more than 14 times already. We went to a party and cos they had business for the chapter she was and it was private I was taken back to where she lives. but I was ok with that as I just wanted to go home.
So here we are again. I think Jan Drexler may be on vacation too! Dorothy Clark will be here on TH. Tomorrow I'm going to take a research trip to a logging camp museum about an hour away. They also have a steam engine that was used by the loggin company. So I will be here just a bit.
Do you enjoy taking little sidetrips?

Is there anything interesting near you? I can always use a prompt for story ideas.

tend to be short, equally frustrating and sweet, and easy reading;
usually has a happy ending (decided they really did love each other after all)

All the places I've been to have been on trips with my parents, and that's anywhere from a day trip into Pittsburgh with my mom when I was little to a long weekend ... longest was 3 weeks in a tent trailer out West!
Last small side-trip I went on was to The Ark in Kentucky.
Oh, I only took a zillion pictures there.
NOT a place to go if you can't walk long distances, and there were a few things I didn't agree with (like having dinosaurs on the Ark!), but still an interesting place to visit.
The Creation Museum ... again, interesting, but don't agree on some of the things.
Lancaster and the Sight & Sound Theater has been a favorite.
I've seen Adam, Noah, Moses, and Jonah.
(Noah was my favorite, though!)
Pittsburgh Zoo, National Aviary, and the Science Center were favorite day trips when i was growing up.

Those sounds like great daytrips, Megan! You have more near you than I do--up here in the northwoods!

There are several near KC. One is the Watkins Woolen Mill State Park, which is the only 19th century textile mill in the United States with its original machinery still intact; https://mostateparks.com/park/watkins...
Another is the Mahaffie House, which boasts of being one of the few stagecoach stops left on the Santa Fe Trail:
http://www.mahaffie.org/
We have visited both and they are fascinating! We also have many, many others like the Jesse James Jail & Homestead, the Hallmark farm (which we had a personal tour of), etc....

I am just seeing this as I was off the computer over the weekend. My 12 year-old (13! end of this month) grandson was here all weekend so spent all my time with him.
I am looking forward to it....Dorothy Clark, Jan Drexler, Gabrielle Meyers and Lyn Cote!
Blessings, Tina

WOW. You do live in an interesting area!
WOW. You do live in an interesting area!

I've also been to Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Another wonderful trip into the past.
I'm sorry I couldn't be here earlier today I had some medical stuff to take care of.

Not on vacation! Just deep into writing and revising!
I'm working on revisions for the sequel to "An Amish Courtship," scheduled to be released in March. :)
I love reading about all the day trips everyone has taken! We live in a great part of the country for research. I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and we have Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Devils Tower, Custer State Park, Deadwood...the list is almost endless.
And yet, I write Amish stories! So my research trips are usually to Shipshewana, Indiana, near my dad's home. I've also been to Lancaster County, PA, and Holmes County, OH.
Have any of you visited an Amish community?

Yes, to Kalona Iowa when I lived in that state. It's the oldest Amish community west of the Miss R-1848.
Thanks for coming, Jan. Please drop in tomorrow since I'll be gone most of the day!

I have been to an Amish community, in southern Indiana. I also worked with a former Amish woman when I was in High School. She was in nursing school, while her husband was in medical school. They wanted to be the Dr. & nurse for their former community, each had a sibling die for lack of medical care.
When hubby and I were first married, very broke, and living in Denver. We took a lot of side trips to ghost towns, abandoned gold mine camps and anything else that was free, minus the price of gas. The old cemeteries were both interesting and sad at the same time.

When I was in America my friend took me to a few places like Rock City and Ruby Falls.
I have been to places around here also. When on holidays I have done some day or half day bus trips to see the sights or different places.

We buy flowers, garden plants, herbs, etc. from the Amish near us. And we bought our puppy from an Amish lady in Lancaster, PA. The Amish men do a lot of building in the area. They built our daughter's three car garage. And our granddaughter's boyfriend's special dog house. He's with the Sheriff's canine unit and his dog's specialty is bombs.

I love mail-order bride stories because they have twists and turns that I have not thought of before.
Twin mail-order brides sound interesting.
I grew up in northern Maryland about 1 hour away from Lancaster PA so we would go up to Amish country for day trips all the time. I love visiting historical places. There is more here in Mississippi that they should use for tourists but the locals do not realize it is here.
I am looking forward to both stories.
