The Lifeboat yet another one that wasn't the one I was looking for, but oh, well, thought I'd throw it into the pot.
Lifeboat another near miss--but this sounds really interesting, as, from the description (or what I read of it--it seems to be about historical shipwrecks or abandonments at sea.
Lifeboat No. 8: An Untold Tale of Love, Loss, and Surviving the Titanic after all, what lifeboat story would be complete without some kind of mention of the Titanic, right? (Still not my story I was looking for.)
Lifeboat 7 I THINK this is the one I was looking for. I never read it, but my Dad (25 years in the Navy, including service at the end of WWII, Korea and Vietnam) read it 2 or 3 times that I can remember, and always talked about it afterwards.
And even if that last one wasn't it--it's late and I'm tired, so am giving up (and not going through the rest of the 66 pages.)

@Ann: Thanks for the suggestions. Not 100% what I was looking for but definitely not uninteresting. Especially your dad's book ended up on my to read list.

Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption This one is not all set on the ocean, but there is a significant part of it that is what you're looking for, though they are in a life raft.
Overboard!: A True Blue-water Odyssey of Disaster and Survival
Adrift: Seventy-Six Days Lost at Sea This book was excellent. He did have a life raft, but he had to make do with so little. I found this book excellent.
Staying Alive A couple with a life raft and dingy survive for months. I also enjoyed this book a great deal.
Storm: Stories of Survival from Land, Sea and Sky This has several stories of survival from on the ocean.

In Harm's Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its SurvivorsA true account of the battleship Indianapolis that was hit by a torpedo during WW 2, with the crew trying to survive for 5 days in shark infested water. Might be a little too gruesome.
There's a scene like this in The Far Side of the World: only a scene though, not the whole book ((view spoiler)).If you like stories at sea it's an enjoyable book by itself, but obviously since it's book 10 in a series, it's much better if you've read the previous books.
Medusa: The Shipwreck, The Scandal, The Masterpiece: I haven't read it. This one probably covers more than just the shipwreck itself, but seems interesting.

I looked for similar threads but didn't really find what I am looking for.
I'm looking for books where the character ends up on the ocean with as little as possible. If it's just him swimming in the water that would be the best. Maybe with his own boat nearby but without a chance to get up on it.
I'm looking for stories where the character does not strand on an island but is actually lost in the middle of the ocean.
Kinda like that movie "Open Water" if anyone knows that.
Been looking for books like that for a while now.
