Hard-boiled detective in San Diego

I'm looking for honest/fair reviews in response to gifted copies of this book. It's a return to the classic hard-boiled PI (think Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett), but in a modern-day setting... and a protagonist who has more depth. This guy is hard-as-nails, like Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade, but he has a small circle of friends he's close to and looks after.
