This years shortlist: The Wren, the Wren
Brotherless Night
River East, River West
Enter Ghost
Restless Dolly Maunder
Soldier Sailor
I’ve read two so far, Dolly and Sailor and enjoyed them both.
I've read 3 from the shortlist so far:
The Wren, The Wren
Brotherless Night
Enter Ghost
I've enjoyed all 3, but If I had to name a favorite I would say Brotherless Night.
I currently have River East, River West checked out from the library as well.

I’ve got enter ghost next then that’s the short list and most of the long done. I’d like brotherless night or the wren to win
I have read 5/6, just River East, River West to read. I have started it, but it isn’t grabbing me. I like Brotherless Night and Enter Ghost. The latter might be just a bit too controversial politically. Not that that should matter if it is regarded as the best book, but . . .
River east is heartbreaking and also interesting but won’t win. However it’s probably the most accessible
What are our opinions on the previous winners ? Do we agree with final choices? Do you think others should have won?
I ve definitely preferred others to the ultimate winner . Sometimes it seems that the most current or politically correct or spicy wins rather than what is actually a gripping read
I’ve read 4 of this year’s shortlist now and agree Brotherless Night is powerful and I think would be a worthy winner.I thought last years winner Demon Copperhead deserved to win, it was fabulous
For 2022 my choice to win would have been The Sentence over The Book of Form and Emptiness
Interesting Carol - I ve not read either of those - after finding myself struggling to get through some of the shortlist choices a few years back I ve been more selective which ones I read. I m listening to Demon Copperhead currently .
Not as long as ‘the square of sevens’ ‘bee sting’ or ‘the overstory’ my groups are doing in next few weeks!
