Also, and in the same vein, I have a joke.

Two women walk into a bar. One says to the other,"Have you ever heard of the Bechdel test?"

The other woman replies, "Yeah, my boyfriend was telling me about it the other day."

Rachel | 53 comments Hello all,
I boutht the book today and plan on reading for bookclub. I know we will pick a date later, but do you have an idea of when we'll meet end, beginning Sept, beginning Oct?

message 56: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Beginning of Sept I reckon. Am only at the 100-page mark at the mo!

@Sanjeev I love the image of the author as a lone person stuck on a distant star and trying to communicate with earth.

message 59: by Justin (last edited Aug 17, 2014 01:51AM) (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Some great advice there from Steiny.

message 60: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Too bad he was stuck on a distant planet. Maybe he was there with friends and they drunk-left without him?

message 61: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Almost done. This is SOME book. Blown away here. Need to meet and talk about it! Although I'm guessing it won't be till September...

message 62: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments im waiting for this moment since april or march i think :) now we are two!

message 63: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
We can do it before September if everyone's around. Show of hands? Who's around?

message 64: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Hand up here! Although I go away again Thurs 28th Aug.

message 65: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 53 comments Will finish on tues. I likeit so much more than I thought I would. But, I go away Tues and don't come back until Aug 27. I totally want to be a part of the discussion, please don't have it early.

message 66: by Viviane (new)

Viviane | 172 comments Hello, I will be available next week. The following is tougher as it Back to school. However, feel free to do without me as I will begin the book this week only (I wanted to finish another first and I was too optimistic :)) .

message 67: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments We can wait till Sept, Rachel and Viviane!

message 68: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
I'm actually glad we're waiting til September because I'm only a third of the way into it right now.

I love Lee's character and the way social pressures have forced him into the role of pinyin-speaking, ponytail-wearing chinese servant. It reminds me of the way Danbi pressures Justin to act pridefully British.

message 69: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments I'm a bit sick of the top hat she keeps making me wear...

message 70: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments We need to talk sence in this hat! Though I have never seen it before :)

message 71: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 53 comments Can't wait to discuss; really. Liked this book and not at all what I expected. When do we vote/decide the date?

message 72: by Danbi (new)

Danbi | 30 comments Oh come now, is it too much to expect an Englishman to sport a Union Jack tattoo and break into a rousing rendition of "God Save the Queen" every few hours or so?

message 73: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments I'm guessing first or second week of Sept? Should we sort a date?

And Danbi: I think you're confusing me with some skinhead from the British National Front (aka BNP)! :)

message 74: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments SO: when we meeting!!!

message 75: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
Next week work for everybody, or as Lee would say, evlybadie?

message 76: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
So apparently, Jennifer Lawrence is to play Cathy Ames in the upcoming film adaptation. No images of the film have, as yet, been leaked.

message 77: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Oooh another film of it. Would like to see the Elia Kazan one first, even if it misses loads out.
Next week is good for me!

message 78: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Racist, René - although not as bad as Charlie & The Great Glass Elevator (which I'm currently reading my son).

message 79: by René (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
You think the glass elevator is actually a glass ceiling for orientation-challenged individuals?

message 80: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Ah, I see, it's actually a test to see how racist my son wants to be to the Chinese? (I'm actually removing all the racist bits before he hears it; what joy!)

message 81: by René (last edited Sep 03, 2014 02:24AM) (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
It's not racist if the chine[se gentle]man is secretely smart and articulate and shit.

message 82: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments True. But anti-semite Dahl doesn't go that far!

message 83: by René (last edited Sep 03, 2014 02:36AM) (new)

René: me, who balked at (re)reading something tense&grim over the summer read Blood Meridian and Céline instead!!!!! Ha. (I am truly grimmed-out for good. )

message 85: by Katerina (new)

Katerina | 496 comments Im in for this or next week:)

message 86: by René (last edited Sep 04, 2014 01:28AM) (new)

René (cigro) | 643 comments Mod
@Jane: I don't know why you say that East of Eden is grim. It is, at its heart, the story of a Chinese gentleman's quest for a comfortable reading chair. The husband-shooting whores are just thrown in for historical context.

@Katerina good stuff! I'll put up a doodle.

message 87: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Jane: Blood Meridian, now there's an amazing book! Did you like?

message 88: by Viviane (new)

message 94: by Justin (new)

Justin Hood | 628 comments Perfect. (I may be late due to parents' evening/meet the new teacher stuff.)

message 95: by Viviane (new)

Viviane | 172 comments Me too (meet the new teacher might be late...)!
