I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Wil Wheaton. It's an easy listen and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane. If you are in any way associated with the 80's - this will be a fun nostalgic read.
It's set in the future where most of humanity spends their time living in a virtual world called the Oasis. The creator of the Oasis died and left a visual will - the will states that whoever can find an Easter Egg hidden in the virtual world will inherit his massive empire and fortune. The creator was obsessed with 80s pop culture so now most of the world is extremely well versed in that time period in order to gain any advantage in finding the Easter Egg. While everyone in the world is aggressively looking for the Easter Egg - there some even more ruthless people willing to commit murder to find it.
This was a great read for summer- quick, easy and fun. It's part nostalgia, part treasure hunt, a bit of social commentary and there's a little love story in there too. Also - I kind of want the Oasis to really exist - a little bit - it's kind of cool.
The book was very well received and has been translated into over 20 languages. There has been push back from some groups who think the book relies to heavily on 80s references, but I believe they are taking themselves too seriously.
The book will be adapted for the big screen and will be directed by Steven Spielberg. There is already a trailer for the movie. I haven't seen the trailer yet but I'm sure it will be a good movie. But the other thing I'm also sure about - the book is always better ;)
