Yes, I've heard similar stories about Kirkus, with their reviews sounding more like recaps than genuine reviews. And frankly there are far better ways to spend your money to increase book sales.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, but hopefully your sharing about it will prevent others from falling in the same trap.
The role of Kirkus may at one time have been quite influential, but it is no longer. Most indie authors I know warn against any sort of paid reviews.
