Robert Zwilling | 2911 comments Most troubling to researchers is a crack at the center of a Greenland ice shelf that is acting as a brake on the Petermann Glacier whose movement has been speeding up and is holding back even more ice. It's an unusual place for cracks to form, and it could connect to separate cracks forming at the sides. Any ice from Greenland that falls in the water instantly raises the sea level.

Robert Zwilling | 2911 comments Ice and snow packs in Siberia, Greenland, North Canada, and sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, have all been melting at increasing rates, contributing fresh water to the Gulf Stream region which could weaken the Gulf Stream, researchers say.

According to researchers, in the short term it could lead to harsher, stormier winters and drier summers for countries in Europe, whose climate now is ameliorated [improved] by the Gulf Stream.
