He looked at her with his piercing forest-green eyes. "Why do you think?"

She tried not to crack under his daunting look. "I don't know.."

His look softened slightly. "Because I love you, Emma Max."

"And what about Emma Runner..?" She dared to ask.

"I love you no matter what name you choose," he said forcefully.

"You hate the Runners and I'm supposed to believe you? You just KILLED a Runner. I'm supposed to believe you wouldn't turn around and do the same to me?" Emma burst out.

Alberon was unperturbed. "Clarification: I defended my sister from being murdered by a Runner. I don't hate the Runners. The Runners hate me." He looked her in the eyes, that piercing gaze back again. "Do you hate me, Emma? Say the word and I'll be out of your life forever."

Emma found the strength to stare back with her own deep-green eyes. "You didn't answer my question."

"I could never kill you," he vowed.

She looked at him carefully to see if he could be lying.

He met her gaze unflinchingly.

She thought back to what Noah had told her. "It's either you or them.."

He didn't say anything, just continued to look into her eyes, trying to figure out what she was thinking.

How did I get in so deep? Survival before everything else, wasn't it? That's all I've ever known. "I hate what you did but I love you." If that even makes any sense!, she thought after saying that.

He considered that for a moment. "I understand."

Emma nodded silently and looked down, unable to keep up the staring contest.

"Emma..." He gently slipped two fingers under her chin and raised her head. "Are you choosing me?" He said it quietly. He had to know.

She remained silent for a moment. "Always."

He suddenly seized her and kissed her fiercely.

Emma kissed him back with a similar passion. She made her choice.

He held her close to him. Only grateful. He hadn't shown it, but he'd been really, really desperatescared for the last few minutes.

She closed her eyes and fought the images of Brooklyn away. They would no longer haunt her. Who knew? Maybe there was still a way to be a Runner and not lose Alberon. If there was, she would find a way and make it work.

"People have seen me now. It's only a matter of time before someone tells Chase Im still alive." she said with a tiny step back to look at him.

"Then we'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe from him." There was a hard determination in his voice.

Emma didn't doubt he would. Instead she wondered just how far he would go.Made her glad she wasn't one of his enemies. "Ok."

He pursed his lips. "How much longer so you think we have?"

"Depends on how loyal Luke is still to Chase.."

[Breanna Joy]

He smiled grimly. "Not very. He won't say anything. I don't think."

"That would definitely be good.. Alberon, I can't go back home." Emma replied.

He knew why she didn't want to. He wasn't going to say anything about it though. "You can stay at my place for a while. Although, I don't have a door anymore." Thanks to your brother's visit. "Or I suppose you could talk to the Runners..."

"What happened to your door?£ she asked curiously.

"Noah visited."

"Mmm." Enough said. "Then he owes you a door."

"I can fix it." Maybe. He would have to check to see if the frame had been destroyed as well.
