Great article. I loved this quote from it, "It's like a stripped-down, haiku vision of children everywhere." I'm having a hard time articulating why I was so disturbed by this novel. Everything is very familiar, but slightly, deeply off.
Just finished watching the movie. Several good actors but not a good movie. I was not a fan of book so hard to like movie.
It wasn't a great movie. But I agree, the actors were the best part. Well, Carrie Mulligan was the best part. I thought it did a good job of capturing the ethereal quality of the book, but it tried to turn it into some sort of love triangle. Sorry you didn't like the book, Kris. What was it that you didn't like? (Not that I really LIKED the book either...)
The book was just so sad and really depressing. Maybe I wanted something more to happen in the end. They get deferred and live happily ever after or kathy gets to stay a carer and grow old or they rise up against the system and run away. They just excepted everything...
