John Clarke (johnnyboi77) | 9 comments My favourite one is the Do-It-Yourself book, because I can make my own stories and share them with my family!

Michael Spalcado | 5 comments I prefer Rodrick Rules as it really highlights the typical relationship of a younger and older brother, and Greg's feelings towards him that continue to develop throughout the series.

P.S. Spoiler Alert: Manny dies

The book starts on January 1, with Greg talking about his family's New Years resolutions. Life becomes more difficult for Greg and Rowley when their school bus is "rezoned" to the Whirley Street neighborhood and they have to walk to and from school.
Greg also talks about how his dad, Frank, unfairly compares him to his boss's sons, who are very athletic, as Frank is deeply jealous of his boss's sons. After conflicts over Greg wanting to stay inside and watch TV on Saturdays and Frank stealing his school snacks, Frank makes him sign up for rec league soccer after an incident at church on Easter.
At first, he rides the bench, but becomes the starting goalie when the main goalie is injured. He allows a goal to ruin his team's perfect season because he took a break to pick dandelions on the field.
After this, Frank runs into a neighborhood troublemaker named Lenwood who has apparently reformed after going to military school. Impressed with his former enemy's turnaround, he signs up Greg for a summer military school program at a place called Spag Union, hoping Greg will change for the better.
To impress his dad and thereby avoid military school, Greg decides to join the Boy Scouts. However, he is sick and misses their camping trip, which Frank has to go to anyway (he's a chaperone) and has a terrible time. Later, when Greg, Frank, and Rodrick have a camping "do-over", they end up at a hotel after heavy rain, where Rodrick locks Greg out of their room in his underwear.
After this, Greg becomes more resigned to his military school fate, especially after his attempts to make a good impression on a girl named Holly Hills in his class. But on what he thinks is his only day of summer vacation, Greg ends up saving Frank from making a fool of himself at their neighbor's birthday party.
The next day, his dad decides Greg doesn't have to go to military school after all, and the book ends with Greg looking forward to his summer vacation.

John Clarke (johnnyboi77) | 9 comments My Dog Days Plot Synopsis:

The book starts with Greg describing how he is more of an "indoor person", and how he will spend his summer vacation playing video games; unfortunately, his mother stops him, saying that he has better things to do. Greg and his friend Rowley go to Rowley's country club after school closes for the summer, but after a few weeks, Greg is not invited to return because he complains about even the smallest things, much to his disappointment. Greg doesn't want to go to the town pool with his mother and little brother because of the shower area he has to walk through to get to the pool.
A few weeks later, Rowley and his father arrive at the Heffley residence, informing Greg's mother that Greg and Rowley racked up a bill for $83 worth of smoothies at the country club. Both boys decline to pay, saying they were unaware they would be charged and it would be unfair to do so (Rowley's father is an architect), but Greg's mother and Rowley's father disagree. Greg and Rowley decide to start a lawn care service called the "V.I.P. Lawn Care Service". Unfortunately, the job is a fiasco since the boys have never used a lawn mower before.
During Greg's birthday party, Susan confiscates some of his birthday money to pay off Rowley's dad's smoothie bill from the country club. Greg also gets a Ladybug, a cell phone that can only make emergency calls and home calls. Greg, Rodrick, Manny, and his mom go to the local pet store. Greg gets an angelfish but Rodrick, on the other hand, gets a pet piranha which he doesn't take care of while Manny buys fish food which he later eats as a snack. After a trip to the water park, Greg finds that the piranha ate his angelfish while they were gone, upsetting Greg.
When Frank learns at a family lunch that his father accidentally killed his dog when he was young, he goes to get a new dog to cope with the loss. The family named him Sweetie, which causes significant problems for Greg's summer. Greg and his mom meet Rowley's family at the supermarket, where they are buying groceries for their family vacation. Rowley's mom invites Greg to the beach, to which his mom agrees, with disastrous results.
After this incident, Greg is afraid that his dad is going to sell him to an orphanage, and he calls the police with his Ladybug phone. After a long talk with the police, Frank gives the cops tickets to a baseball game to repay them for their trouble, and it turns out that Frank was giving Sweetie to Grandma. Susan is disappointed because she brought the tickets for Frank and Greg to spend time together. After hearing about a video game competition, Greg and Rowley decide to camp in front of the video game hut, thinking that's where the competition is going to be. However, Rowley accidentally injures Greg's hand, forcing Greg to scratch from the competition. At the end of the summer, Greg regrets not staying at home throughout the summer and play video games. His mother views this as a Best Summer Ever, while Greg views it as a horrible summer.
