After a really tight race, The End of the Affair edged out The Reluctant Fundamentalist for the win. Tess of the D’Urbervilles and The Heart of the Matter tied for third place only one vote behind The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

I've read the Greene book, so I'll go for the Gorky. It's been collecting dust on my shelf, so I'm glad it was chosen. I've also read the Herculean books. Aaaand, I've got to see the USA in my....Toyota.

Will definitely read Greene, since it will be my first. Not sure about Gorky, Artamonov is close to impossible to find in Australia. I could get it in French from Amazon, but I doubt I will get it in time to be able to read it before the end of the month. Otherwise, I will stick to the Herculean task and finish catching up on recent BOTMs.

I'll try to catch some Horses and continue Westward. I will read The Reluctant Fundamentalist since I happen to have it on loan from the library. Maybe I'll get to the Greene.

I will be reading The End of the Affair. I do not have the Gorky book but will check to see how hard it is to find but probably not going to get to it.

Now that there is not so many books to read I should check out the Herculean book. I just could not even consider it before. Of course I will be reading the next book in the Lord of the Rings.

I did learn that I probably should use more participation points but not sure about strategy.

I am also going to finish up my Uncle Tom's Cabin (in my Ford Explorer) and then will see what will be the next part of my summer trip.

I feel a little sick about unknowingly reading both The End of the Affair and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? within the last two weeks. This will exclude me from any point gains with the new system. I probably won't read The Artamonov Business because I don't own it or have library access to it.

The Artamonov Business will be hard to find. I will try ordering it from my university library. There are a few used copies on Amazon that aren't too expensive. I suggest getting them asap.

I will try reading both and maybe one of the Herculean challenge books.

I also need to get moving on the annual read. This will be a heavy reading month for me b/c BW and I try to read all the Man Booker longlist nominees before the shortlist is announced. We shall see how productive I will be with 1001 books.

I can't find or afford the Gorky novel and read (a long time ago) the End of the Affair...so I'm just going to continue to travel across the U.S. I'm reading They Shoot Horses, Don't They? at the moment as I move through Tennessee.

I am starting The Lord of the Rings, but after reading The Philosophy of Tolkien: The Worldview Behind the Lord of the Rings this month have decided to start with The Hobbit. If I have time I will shoot some horses and end the affair.

Really want to read The End of the Affair, and I think I even already own a copy! I'm going to try to read some of the Man Booker longlist though, and that could possibly make it a challenge to get to all my scheduled reading commitments. I hope not!

I will read The End of the Affair. I may have read it in the distant past, loved the movie when young, it is time to read it again. I have searched everywhere for The Artamonov Affair without success, so won't be reading that. I MUST finish The Idiot, plod on through LOTR and finally start the annual read. August will be busy!

I found the Gorky book on Mnlinks. They do have a few copies.

FYI, I really enjoy reading, thinking about, and sometimes answering the discussion questions....I just tend to get to the books and questions later than the rest of the group.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you enjoy reading along and thinking about the books. That's what we are all here for. We all read at our own pace so I'm glad you can enjoy reading the books regardless of when you get to them!

what's mnlinks? AMazon has a few used copies for $3 or so too.

Mnlinks allows you to get a book from any library in Minnesota, including the college and university libraries.

Yes, the Minnesota Library group has a few copies of Gorky's books so I did request one, not sure how long it will take to get here. They usually are pretty fast. Mine is coming from Bethel College and I think some other colleges have a copy if John wants to request a copy.

I tried looking for Greene's book at our library, but it's not available. I think I'll stick with LOTR and maybe try and catch up on a prior BOTM if I have time. Bummed about the Greene book-it looked good!

I think I found the artomonov book in english on archive.org, since it is public domain in some areas, but I have been away from my computer so I have not tried downloading.

This month I intend to read one of the labour books, continue the roadtrip, and hopefully find time for Tolkien. I don't have either of the BotM yet, and I'd prefer to extend my no-buy as long as possible, but I'll keep my eyes open for cheap copies.
