message 262: by Zoë (last edited Mar 18, 2017 09:48AM) (new)

Zoë (zoeblife) | 1378 comments Hey all! So I watched Beauty and the Beast last night and I know I told ya'll that I would tell you about it, soo.....

IT WAS AMAZING.

And the "excusively gay moment" (or moments) probably accounted for less than 0.2% of the movie, and about 8 seconds total. While still slightly present, I do believe social media has blown the situation up to be more than it really was.
In fact, the hints that Le Fou was gay were so subtle that they were almost nonexistent and I likely wouldn't have figured it out had I not know previously. I even saw that Melanie Dickerson posted on her Facebook page that after watching the movie, she thought the controversy was "bogus", and the movie was "great'.
Even so, for you to decide for yourself if you would like to watch it, here are all of the possibly gay scenes:

-During the song "Gaston", the people in the pub are dancing and sing, Le Fou and Gaston at the center of it, of course. While dancing, Le Fou grabs Gaston's arms and wraps them around himself. They pause singing and Le Fou says "Too much?" and Gaston replies "Yes".
They resume singing.
(Le Fou actually talks several times about girls in a romantic sense to Gaston, saying that Gaston can have any girl he wants and there "are many other pretty girls". Gaston also says many times to Le Fou about how good friends they are. There is no mention of any attraction between them)
-Gaston is admiring himself in a mirror and when is pulled away, looks at himself and says "I'm not done with you yet". He walks off and Le Fou in turn looks at himself in the mirror and says "I'm not either." Written down, it sounds as though Le Fou is talking about Gaston, but the impression I got watching the movie was that Le Fou was actually being narcissistic, not gay.
-During a battle, a magic wardrobe shoots out her feminine clothes at three men and wraps them up in womanly dresses and makeup. Two of the men yell and run away, horrified. The other man looks up, smiles, and then walks off. (Note, things like this have happened before in other movies and was purely silly--such as Tangled's short film where Maximus gets dressed up in a dress, heels, and makeup-- but people think Disney was being more than silly in this scene. However, it could have so been easily overlooked as silly.)
Those scenes were what could be taken as gay if you were looking at them that way, but with no prior knowledge would likely not have been noticed as noticeably unusual.
The "exclusively gay moment" comes at the end of the movie and lasts about a total of one and a half seconds.
-Le Fou is dancing with a girl in the celebratory dance after everyone who is magical has been returned to human form. In a second, the man who had been dressed in girls clothes earlier in the film, now wearing men's clothes again, steps in and takes the girl's place, resuming to dance with Le Fou. There was no gay kissing, as was largely thought on social media.

These were all of the possibly gay scenes and were really very small.
The whole controversy I believe comes not necessarily from how the scenes are, but the fact that they were placed in a kids movie and could possibly be a small stepping stone to Disney placing more, larger, scenes such as this in future movies.

I believe it is totally and completely up to as to whether to decide to support this movie or watch it later when it comes out on DVD, or if you choose not to watch it at all.
But I will say that it was a beautiful, magical tale with astounding animation, music, and heart-wrenching moments, such as when the Beast sings his new song "Evermore" (my favourite). I would place this movie as being equally amazing as Cinderella, and would place it even slightly higher if it were not for the subtle but still present gay scenes.

Princess Emilia | 1655 comments I was gonna see it with some friends today, but it was sold out :/

message 270: by Dominique (new)

Dominique (domsvoyages) | 2662 comments I went with my grandma to try and see it Saturday, and they had sold out. And then we were going to get tickets for the next showing and just come back, but the lady said we would have to be there an hour early to get seats together o.O so we went shopping instead haha

message 271: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zoeblife) | 1378 comments Yeah, I bought my tickets online beforehand, and I'm glad I did. When I went with my youth group, the rest of the youth weren't able to get in because it was sold out. And it was a miracle I found as good of seats as I did! I was there an 45 minutes early and the auditorium was already pretty full!

message 272: by Haley (new)

Haley S (haleyjs) That is crazy at how packed all these theaters are! I am going in a week or two and hopefully by then hopefully it will be easier to find good seats and tickets!

message 273: by Maddie (new)

Maddie Rogers | 1867 comments I'm going the end of this week with my school. I live in a small town so there isn't much competition. Lol
