I read this book only 1 or 2 years ago. Author's first name may start with B. Brenda? The plot is that the U.S. is made up of communities surrounded by make-shift walls. Only few venture out where it is extremely hostile. Some can choose to live in a larger more secure community but the cost is so high that everyone ends up a slave to the community. The teen female protagonist knows walls will eventually collapse and is preparing with help from her father. He doesn't come home from work one day and shortly after the walls come down from the outside. She is the only one who escapes and joins up with another group on the road. I think they are heading to the sea. It is set in the future but there are no sci-fi aspects to it. Set in a possible scary reality.
