This is a fun book which is an easy read (and that's saying something coming from me). Join us as we share in the ups and downs that are Mr. Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout's voyage Around the World in Eight Days.

Week 1 (Aug 6 - 12) ~ Chapters 1 - 10
Week 2 (Aug 12 - 19) ~ Chapters 11 - 21
Week 3 (Aug 20 - 26) ~ Chapters 22 - 31
Week 4 (Aug 27 - Sept 2) ~ Chapters 32 - 37

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 320 comments I read it recently for a group read. It's a funny book.

Me too. I've read it before and seen two versions of the movie. I always enjoy it.

I haven't read a lot of Verne, but I have mixed feelings. I absolutely love Around the World in 80 Days but I struggled with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea... the beginning was heavy on the technical side and not at all like the movie. I'll post a link to the movies that were made from this book later today in the background discussion.

Yes, I'm not a Jules Verne fan - I think he has a wonderful imagination but terrible execution; I can't say I've enjoyed any of his work. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was the last one I read and as it was the final on the 'should read as they are very famous books of his' and absolute purgatory to get through I was happy to think that I'd never have to read him again! :-)

I read Around the World in 80 Days after reading 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea and was pleasantly surprised. The first book would have been much better without all the science lessons. I really enjoyed the second book, mainly because of Passe-Partout.

Are you saying that you weren't enthralled by the endless lists of latin names for fish and seaweed!?

I was reading the book in French, so I had no clue what fish he was talking about. The plot was exciting, but not the science lessons.
