Jo | 1094 comments In keeping with the theme of an author chosen by the group per decade we reach the 1980s. Please nominate who are the must read authors of the 1980's (and here lets keep it to 2-3 per person). Here we are looking for authors that have written several books in the 1980s.The most popular authors will then be put to a poll. Nominations close at the end of July.

David Merrill | 240 comments The decades get harder and harder to pick just three as we go. I'm thinking we should have a second month with the 70's.

My authors for the 80's are:
Gene Wolfe
C. J. Cherryh
Octavia Butler

I really wanted to see Lucius Shepard and George Alec Effinger in my list, but I think these three more dominated the 80's and Shepard and Effinger are just personal favorites who contributed some of my favorite books of the decade. I had to ignore cyberpunkers and Greg Benford too, which was difficult. But, there you have it, my top 3 80's authors.

Radiantflux | 61 comments I want to nominate:

1. the late great Iain M. Banks for the first book in the Culture series, Consider Phlebas.

2. William Gibson for the birth of cyberpunk with Neuromancer.

3. Vernor Vinge for the books The Peace War and Marooned in Realtime.

Harold Ogle | 14 comments I'll second Iain M Banks, and CJ Cherryh.

To that I'll add Tim Powers, George R R Martin, John Steakley and Daniel Keys Moran.

message 10: by David (new)

David Merrill | 240 comments Unfortunately, you'll need to narrow that list. We each only get to pick three. I'm hoping you'll keep Tim Powers :)

message 11: by Tommi (new)

Tommi Mannila | 2 comments 80's belongs to cyberpunk, so i want to nominate:

1. William Gibson
2. Walter Jon Williams for the book Hardwired
3. George Alec Effinger for the book When Gravity Fails

message 12: by Harold (new)

Harold Ogle | 14 comments Okay then, I'll limit it to these three:

Daniel Keys Moran (Cyberpunk)
John Steakley (military SF - the 80s was a big decade for this, too)
Tim Powers

(As for WJW - excellent choice! - we're not at specific book recommendations yet, but when we get there, I'd vote for Voice of the Whirlwind over Hardwired, but both are excellent)

message 13: by Jo (new)

Jo | 1094 comments As we will now read the 1970s over 2 months you can nominated here till the end of July.

I'm going to go with Octavia E. Butler, John Steakley and William Gibson
