SOLVED. Book About a Man Getting Shot and Waking Up Blind. [s]

So I've only read up the beginning of the book, but enough to know the premise.

It starts out with a man (I've also forgotten the name), who is the protagonist of the story.
He went out to buy some groceries from the store, and gets shot in the head
He recalls how the vegetables dropped from his bag and splats against the ground. He wakes up in the hospital to find that he is completely blind. He cannot see anything but darkness. Like, nada.
He breaks up with his girlfriend/maybe fiance, who still loves him, but he doesn't want to burden her with his disablity so he calls everything off with her
Then he ffinds out that he has a power to still kind of 'see'. When his environment is dark, like nighttime, or the lights are turned off, he is able to see through it. He sees the nurse's face, and the path he takes when he walks outside, and the faces of the detectives who are trying to investigate who shot him.

And I think that's where I stopped in the story, because I can't remember anymore.
