Let me start off by saying that I am exceedingly excited to finally start the Mistborn series! The books have been on my shelf since before the series got popular on booktube, but I just never got around to reading them. It’s time for that to change! I hope you all are just as excited as I am!

Now let’s discuss our thoughts on the prologue and first few chapters shall we?

Prologue:
- I love how this books starts; from the perspective of a villain. We can already tell that this is a world that has been overtaken and where slavery is rampant. We get some interesting world building, with mention of this "Lord Ruler" who seems to rule over The Final Empire. We learn that Obligators are what the royalty use to witness various acts. They work for The Steel Ministry; an organization created by the Lord Ruler.
- The royalty brutally work their slaves, known as "Skaa", with Lord Tresting even mentioning that he executes their family members to keep them in line.

- The Prologue later switches to the perspective of a Skaa named Kelsier, and I'm not sure who or what he is but he is awesome. I mean, he burnt down the whole Tresting estate and killed everyone inside. He definitely wants to start a revolution, and I can't wait to read more about this character!

Chapter 1:
- Vin (whom I'm guessing is our main protagonist) seems like a very interesting character so far. She's a member of a group of thieves in Luthadel.
-She has this odd ability to use "Luck", which I'm sure we will discover more about later on. I'm guessing it's some form of magic she doesn't know much about. So far I really like the protagonist!

Chapter 2:
We get a lot more information in this chapter. THIS IS ALREADY SO EXCITING.
Those Inquisitor things, with the nails driven through their eyes, yo that’s some freaky stuff. I recommend looking up some fan art of these things if you want your eyes to burn their condolences. We get more bits and pieces about Allowmancy (the magic system) and I cannot wait to learn more about Mistings. I’m loving all the characters, especially Kelsier and Dockson, and I’m looking forward to when Vin will be recruited by them and taken away from this Camron guy. Just the whole idea of these underground thief/resistance groups is so awesome. I can already tell this book is going to be epic!

P.S. It’s funny how Kelsier’s nickname is Kell… considering we just finished reading the ADSOM series!

Let me know some of your thoughts so far!

Dani (daniareadss) | 2 comments I'm actually up to chapter 9 by the time I saw this read-along, so I'm just flicking back to the prologue and chapters 1 and 2.

Dimitris (dimitris_lianos) Wow! That is all I'm gonna write at this point!
I didn't expect I'd like it so much so soon. I was literally HOOKED by page 10.

I have a sense that this World and magic system and thousand year history and society classes are super complicated but that the author did not overwhelm us with detailed analyses from the start, which could end up being boring, but immersed us immediately into the amazing story. After 15 minutes of reading I felt as if I were living in that world. Very well done.

Needess to say I was enraged by this "Lord" Tresting and everything he stands for and I was ecstatic when Kelsier wiped him and his mansion off the face of the earth.

I wonder if this Aristocracy are humans, like us, and if skaas belong to a different "race" or if they are exactly the same. The Lord Ruler is described as immortal! Is this Empire somewhere on Earth, maybe in a future, or in another planet/alternate universe? Yeap, I never read High Fantasy seriously before and it shows. ;)

What a great start!

No worries! Glad you're taking part! :D

- I'm so excited to see Vin grow as a character! I have a feeling that she may possibly end up being one of my all time favourite female protagonists! I'm also very excited to see her grow as a Mistborn and discover more powers related to her "Luck" ;)

- Her brother definitely does sound like a jerk so far, and I do have a feeling we might meet him later on. You're right, maybe he did have a reason for leaving?

- I was so happy with the beating Kell gave Camon XD

- Oh and for the title 'Canton of Finance', I think means like a sub-division, so I guess it's a division of finance. Definitely does sound similiar to Camon though!

RIGHT!? I was hooked from the beginning as well. Sanderson has done a great job at slowly introducing us to this huge world and magic system, the pacing is just fantastic. I felt like I was living in the world as well, and I love when a fantasy book can do this.

The book actually doesn't take place on earth at all, in fact, Brandon Sanderson has developed a whole universe known as the 'Cosmere". What's really amazing about this is that a ton of his books take place in the same universe, just different planets. But I've heard that occasionally characters from other books make appearances ;)
So books/series of his such as, Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker, and The Stormlight Archive all take place in the same universe. MIND = BLOWN.
