Michael My head is done in by the number of series and authors that cover this time period. I am interested in reading one series of books covering TWOR and early Tudor history. I am curious which series/author, all of you would recommend. I am looking at the series' by Conn Iggulden, Philippa Gregory, or Alison Weir. However, I am open to any suggestions.

Thank you for any guidance you can give.

Skye | 484 comments Allison Weir, Antonia Frasier, Jean Plaidy ( aka Victoria Holt and Philippa Carr). There are many others as well.

NayNay I enjoyed Conn Iggulden and Alison Weir. Philippa Gregory not so much, she is not very historical correct.

There's many historical fiction for this time period that are enjoyable

To Die For A Novel of Anne Boleyn (Ladies in Waiting, #1) by Sandra Byrd The Secret Keeper A Novel of Kateryn Parr (Ladies in Waiting #2) by Sandra Byrd Roses Have Thorns A Novel of Elizabeth I (Ladies in Waiting #3) by Sandra Byrd

Gilt by Katherine Longshore Tarnish by Katherine Longshore Brazen by Katherine Longshore

The Pleasure Palace (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #1) by Kate Emerson Between Two Queens (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #2) by Kate Emerson By Royal Decree (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #3) by Kate Emerson At the King's Pleasure (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #4 ) by Kate Emerson Royal Inheritance (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #6) by Kate Emerson The King's Damsel (Secrets of the Tudor Court, #5) by Kate Emerson

Beth Sponzilli (bethsponzilli) I liked Philippa Gregory's series quite a bit. I have also read some of Alison Weir's books. Both Good. I think Weir's though are more historically accurate.

Beth Sponzilli (bethsponzilli) Sharon K. Penman's books are great too!

Why not try mine Michael? I started with 'The Agincourt Bride' & 'The Tudor Bride', telling the extraordinary story of Catherine de Valois' two marriages, the first to Henry V and the second to Owen Tudor and thus to the Tudor dynasty, the beginnings of which are told in 'First of the Tudors', which is out now and will be followed by 'The Tudor Crown' which I am currently writing. These cover the adventurous lives of Jasper and Henry Tudor and (obviously) include the marriage of Edmund Tudor to Margaret Beaufort, whose life I have a very different 'take' on compared to those I have read. I intend to complete my version of the Tudor story with the reign of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, being of the opinion that Henry VIII and the rest have been thoroughly overworked. All these are, or will be, published by Harper Collins. Just saying... Joanna Hickson

This author looks very interesting but it appears to be non-fiction, which I love but wasn't the question about historical fiction?

Joanna,
I have been reading Dan Jones' Wars of the Roses and have developed a great interest in Catherine, Owen, et al. So I will surely pick up 'The Agincourt Bride'.

My attempt to find one "best" series of historical fiction covering this era has proven to be a failure. All of the great suggestions given to me from this group has made it clear that I am meant to read them all!

Thank you for your suggestion and I will leave a review of your book when I finish it.

Cheers!

Michell,

Thanks for the suggestions. Jean Plaidy is one I have never heard of but looks interesting. Philippa Carr appears to be more Romance novel than I am looking for.

Cheers!

Michael Thank you to eveyone for the suggestions. Clearly this is an enormous area of interest with even more authors specializing in it than I realized. Still not sure what route to take, but I greatly appreciate all the help!

message 21: by Marian (new)

Marian And I think also Michael..you have to find the right author for you.By that I mean, each author writes differently(style etc)So maybe try out different authors in the beginning and see who you like. You just might surprise yourself.

message 22: by Michell (new)

Michell Karnes (royalreader) | 229 comments Agreed! You should try some different ones to find the one you like.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2165 comments Absolutely! There are a lot of authors; try around and see who you like.

Sabrina Michel | 108 comments Yes, that's perfectly true, not every writer's style happens to coincide with every reader's taste.
Just wanted to mention that for those of you ladies who are really interested in the "late" Tudor Period and Elizabeth I. (I imagine there are quite a few out there). Jean Plaidy has really outdone herself with "Queen Of This Realm". It's part of her "Queen's of England" series. I really couldn't put it down.

message 25: by Michell (new)

Michell Karnes (royalreader) | 229 comments Another example for me would be Wolf Hall....I just can't get into this author's style though I love the topic and of course their are many, many people who obviously love this author.

message 26: by Marian (new)

Marian Like me for instance:)I actually really liked Wolf Hall but I have also heard, her writing in her second book is better, and the third one..now I have heard closer to 2019 she is bringing out.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 2165 comments I liked Wolf Hall a lot, as well as Bring Up the Bodies.

They were saying for a while "autumn 2017" for The Mirror and the Light, but I took that with a large grain of salt, because the date has been pushed back several times already. I'll believe 2018 when I see it. 2019 wouldn't surprise me, either.
