The Lost Symbol
question
What order to read symbol in?

I am a nerd when it comes to studying religions/philosophies and the history of it all. Pretty much I am a nerd for everything Langdon is. I know the correct order for this series, and I know that Inferno is the next movie to be release (2015). Yet, I was wondering if it was possible to coherently read this series out of order? I want to start on the Lost Symbol because I have seen Davinci Code and Angels and Demons movie and wanted to see the next part of the story.

They can be read in any order. There will be a few comments referencing his (Langdon's) reputation or an interaction with the Vatican for instance but even is you know nothing of the other books, you can just take the comments on faith that they actually happened. Everything you need to know for each book is contained in each book. With that said, I do recommend that you read the books since the movies don't compare.
I agree with Ryan, the books can be read in any order, and the movies don't even compare to the books. There is a little cross referencing from Inferno to Angels and Demons, but Lost Symbol can be read at any time. I actually thought The Lost Symbol was the weakest researched out of the 4 Langdon books.
Well I've not read the fourth book yet, but as for the other three, you can read them in any order. It's just that all books reference something from each other, such as background information on Robert's life (aka his Mickey Mouse watch) but other than that, they are mostly stand alone.
Truly they can be read in any order as they are not chronological. None really references the other which I find somewhat annoying. The hero does not really have any continuity throughout. Each book is a work unto itself.

There is chronology but it is not plot dependant nor are the references distracting. There are more connections book to book than at first seems obvio

I've been very reluctant to read them because everybody seems to be reading them and that always puts me off a bit. But on a recent trip everybody was raving about Inferno and then I got the opportunity to swap a copy of The Lost Symbol in a hostel and so I started reading that one. I really liked all the symbols and history in it, but couldn't have been more disappointed in the ending, but a friend convinced me to give him another shot so I'm reading Da Vinci Code at the moment, though I'm not yet as hooked as I was at the beginning of The Lost Symbol, the pace seems to be slower for this one. But I can certainly agree that you can read them completely out of order, you catch on to all that is missing or don't need missing info to follow the current story.
They can be read in any order... Actually, I read The Lost Symbol first, then Inferno, then The Da Vinci Code, and I am currently reading Angels and Demons. The order doesn't matter :)
