Just finished East of Eden by John Steinbeck... it was a long one, but worth it (for me at least).

I’m planning on starting The Godfather next!

message 117: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Cross the stand by Stephen king

message 118: by Chris (new)

Chris S | 48 comments I’m going to second that, Matthew.
If anyone watched The Great American Read on PBS, it came in, in the top 25. I definitely think it should have been a Top 5. It’s a very long book but don’t let that discourage you. It’s fantastic!!

message 119: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Cross that it is Chris , this is my second time around reading the complete and extended cut ( the way king intended it to be ) ive recently purchased the original cut for my king collection but I don't think I can read it knowing that there's a goo 500 or so pages cut out

message 120: by Chris (new)

Chris S | 48 comments OK, I confess I read the original version the year it was first published. The unabridged version has sat on my bookshelf since its publication. I know I have to read that version but my To Read list is wicked long.

message 121: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Cross :)

message 122: by Paula (new)

Paula | 56 comments To complete a couple of my personal book reading challenges for 2018, I'm doing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in audio. (That will finish the series for me.) And the next to last book in the Narnia series, The Silver Chair in paperback.

With the year almost done, I'm hoping my Man Booker group decides on True History of the Kelly Gang for our November read. I have so many on my TBR, and a boatload of books around here, I won't know what to plunge into next. Perhaps a comedy.

Ana wrote: "I hate Harry Potter and I will kill you Paula!"

I have removed Ana from the group. Not sure if this comment was a joke or not, but either way it was in poor taste and does not reflect the type of discussion we encourage here. Threats are not okay.

The zen of the book club has been restored!

In the wise words of Albus Dumbledore, "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

If anyone else would like to add their favorite Harry Potter quote below you may do so.

message 125: by Chris (new)

Chris S | 48 comments I think I’m the last man on Earth who hasn’t read this series (completely). It’s definitely on my 2019 Reader’s Challenge list!

message 126: by Erin (new)

Erin I'm currently reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King.

Its a huge book but its great!

message 127: by Chris (new)

Chris S | 48 comments Another one on my list. My work book club reads a "huge" book over the holidays and we considered that one, but alas we picked Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell instead.

Susy (susysstories) I just found out that my favorite readathon, the 24in48 readathon was cancelled for January 2020. I'm checking on GR if people are interested in joining me in a 24in28 readathon (way more low key than the original one of course). If so, please let me know!

I'd also like to know what the 24in28 readathon is exactly?

message 135: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) It comes down to reading for 24 hours in 48 hours. So the readathon starts on saturday January 18th at 8:00 AM CET and ends on Monday January 20th at 8:00 AM. Within those 48 hours you try and read as much as you can, trying to reach 24 hours. I’ll be holding 3-hourly check-ins and some sprints.
