Hello ........Since the time when human brains first evolved , Mathematics has been with us .........And with time , we knew , its not just a set of numbers that makes Mathematics....it's ...its just the way we understand our surroundings ...our earth , our universe .......Right from counting the number of biscuits in an Oreo to understanding the behaviour of Distant Black holes , it has ruled us ....So WHY DO YOU THINK MATHEMATICS IS THE ULTIMATE LANGUAGE TO UNDERSTAND THINGS , CAN't it be philosophy or any other subject??

Louis Taylor | 4 comments My take on that is two fold. The first is astronomy. Obviously astronomy is laden with math. What's not so obvious about astronomy is its direct link to cultural supremacy. Cultures who could master the calendar first were often times the culture that could amass more food and thusly a larger population. That snow balls into food storage, specialists, professional military etc. Its not hard to see how ritualization of astronomy arises which then requires the math to understand it. The maya are a perfect example of this. Sumerians and tiwanakians (of Bolivia) are good examples too.

The second reason I believe the world is spoken in math are the four fundamental forces and humanity's struggle to exploit them whilst avoiding entropy. Obviously I don't think cultures of antiquity had direct knowledge of this. But they had to struggle with it regardless. I think the history of maritime invention would be a good example or perhaps even the discovery of the wheel. Ultimately math is needed to increase ones use of the forces and avoidance of entropy.

Philosophically, nothing can be more pure than math and math never lies. Interpretation and argument can be biased, but math as a solution with tangible benefits would be the purest interpretation of life.

Amazingly said .....But i came across an article a few days back ......And it almost convinced me that mathematics sometime uses philosophy to come to its conclusions....For example....there's something called THE OCCUM's RAZOR or law of parsimony....laid down by a philosopher , Which basically says "Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected" , basically means The Simplest Explanation is always turns out to be the correct one ,,,,,this may not be true in all cases , but i read that even Copernicus used this principle to arrive at his conclusion that we live in a Heliocentric System .........and einstein used it while doing his math too .....and the renowned astronomer Carl Sagan also believed in this principle .......i was surprised with the simplicity of that principle and yet so powerful that it has influenced math , Astronomy........Wonderful

Louis Taylor | 4 comments I find occums razor and Copernicus's mediocrity principle to be incredibly useful when viewing the world through that lens. At the heart of those two theories I believe is math. Statistics, specifically.

Everything has a rate of occurrence based upon a set of data points. I think the genius of both philosophies is that it tacitly admits that nothing exists in a void separate of the rest of the universe. It's a beautiful philosophy to start exploring the world.

Ofcourse it surprises me that Maths always tells us the truth . Maybe because The entire universe has a certain kind of pattern and rules and limitations , beyond which it cannot work ....And we try to understand it with Mathematics which is basically nothing but Combination of patterns with rules and limitations

That's a striking point ......

Arko | 21 comments Hello Everyone. What I think is that everything in our reality has a pattern and Mathematics happens to be the subject of those patterns and beyond. Beyond in the sense that there are mathematical concepts which are yet to be found to be produced in our reality, example : Infinity. All other subjects are dedicated towards finding the meaning of patterns hence all subjects need to borrow the mathematical concepts and find how it is appearing in our reality. Some Notable examples are how Newton used Calculus to form his theory of Gravity( of objects whose velocity is very less than that of light) then again Einstein using Riemannian Geometry to revise our understanding of what Gravity is in a broader sense. Same true with using Ramanujan's mock modular function for understanding black holes. Also to mention the twistor theory of Penrose's using complex numbers etc. So these are all an attempt to know various areas of our reality through the patterns which remains impregnated everywhere. So interesting it will be to be curious about why there is a pattern to everything. Even unpredictable subatomic particles obeys a pattern as found by Heisenberg. May be having pattern brings a balance to almost every aspects which makes those to exist. And where there is pattern there is Mathematics.

I Completely agree . Its all about the patterns ...But i see that these patterns are not uniform though , i mean , for example Quantum Mechanics shows an entirely Different set of rules and patterns and when we come to the next level , there are mostly these biological stuff , Speaking of which , Fabbonacci sequence comes in action and the next level , its the world of Newtonian Mechanics ...and going further , there wierd stuff , these stars , pulsars , quasars need some different set of Math , and speaking of wierd things , Black holes , Dark matter , Dark energy , Anti matter and Light itself ....Show entirely Different patterns and behaviour .......... ......Thinking of all these stuff around us , leaves less hope in me of Humanity Finding an Ultimate Theory ...or an Ultimate Godly Mathematical Equation that unifies everything ................But it remains to be seen

Arko | 21 comments I agree that there are different sets of patterns as appear to our species with the kind of brain that has evolved through millions of years since the inception of growth of this organ. As we easily see that we can readily visualize 3 dimensions and possibly understand 4 dimensions as well but not much more. People can do various maths based on higher dimension but visualizing is a serious difficult task , highly improbable to any random person. Likewise it seems difficult to say that we can chalk out the Theory of Everything but our history is pretty inspiring in a way. We humans stood erect as homo sapiens roughly 200,000 years ago, fire was found to be utilized by roughly 5,000 years ago but it was just a little more than 400 years ago that Galileo could observe our planetary neighbourhood and put us on right understanding about our solar & planetary distribution. It is only about 350 years ago that calculus was formed by Newton and Leibniz. Just imagine that only 250 years (roughly) ago electricity and magnetism was weaved together ever so elegantly by Maxwell to be followed by the most beautiful unification of space and time(completely different in appearance) by Einstein in a General Theory of Relativity, roughly a century ago. In the grand scheme of things these are just a blink of an eye( higher form of eye that is). 20th century has been a remarkable era for Science. Saeculum Mirabilis I must say. Dirac's unification of quantum mechanics & special relativity , then the Brout Englert Higgs mechanism & Higgs boson theorization followed by the beautiful electroweak unification [SU(2)xU(1)] by Weinberg, Glashow and Salam. Not to be missed the amazing discovery of our DNA through the window opened by the crystallographic data of Franklin. These were all those stupendous scientific feats which have been proven to be a part of our reality. Parallely humankind did this massive theoretical work of superstring & M theory which is one of the best candidate for theory of everything. The invention of world wide web is also a marvellous milestone of human achievement. So my friend Alok, this gives us a hope to rely on human ability to work on this wonderful pursuit to find an unified theory of everything. Just 500 years and we are understanding so many intricate things like how our cosmos is bathed in an invisible field that breaks the SU(2)xU(1) symmetry and imparts most of the particles with a mass that nevertheless accounts for a small fraction of the masses of composite objects. Then the accelerated expansion of our universe, sequencing our genome like never before by Human Genome Project, dedicated work of scientists in CRISPR project and so on. I very well understand your apprehension which may be quite natural as more we learn we get an idea of how far we are behind to grasp that one inch long equation ( as Dr. Michio Kaku puts it) or the theory of everything. Still the achievement of human species in the past 500 years and as I have seen my own father's zeal towards life, gives me an inexplicable thrill and inspiration to strive and dive into the unknown with an unsaid hope that may be , just may be we can catch hold of one loose string of the blanket that wraps the true picture of our reality then we all can transform rapidly. But that may be a child's dream in me as well. Newton once said something like this : To explain all Nature is too difficult a task for any one person or even for any one generation.

But even it is someday in distant future, it is very bold and thrilling to think that [it] can be achieved. As of now I think in this thrilling way.

Yes ......Searching For the reality of nature is a kind of "Mass Quest" and when i say mass , i mean entire Humanity through all its generations .....And surely it should happen in a certain chain of events ...like if Newton Hadn't discovered Gravity , maybe Relativity might not have been proposed......And speaking of Advancement , Sometime Late next year , we might have the Giant JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE orbiting at an extreme distance around the earth , Just imagine , a telescope , size of a school bus opened hundreds of secrets about our universe and unlocked secrets of formation of Stars (our true ancestors) ......What might the Giant Telescope shielded with something the size of a Tennis court could do .......oo i cant wait to see those first astonishing images JWST sends us .......

Arko | 21 comments It is very likely that every genius has stood on the shoulder of giants to see further & indeed build something new but if Newton would not have arrived at the theory of gravitation then some one else surely would have been but when and what the theory would have been is difficult to say.
Now its again interesting to debate who was the first genius or was it a group effort long ago in the past.

Yes, I am also anxiously waiting for JWST to be put on the Lagrangian-2 point and many more other projects as well...Breakthrough Starshot, LIGO detected gravitational waves for the third time now... what happens to the forming of Future Circular Collider.... Such exciting stuffs... Much happy to share all these with my family members at home, all of you here and all inquisitive minded people around the world alike.
