Robert Cauley | 175 comments I am looking for 2 short stories. The first is one in which aliens arrive peacefully. It starts to dawn on people though that the aliens are not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed. The 1st inkling to the reader is when a hustler sells the aliens or some of them the Brooklyn Bridge...5X. the 2nd is when the Captain of the Starship ask a Catholic Bishop where they can get an animal to sacrifice to propitiate the gods, The Bishop agasht says something like "Heathens".Scientists figure out that the average intelligence level in the Galaxy is about 75. The 2nd story starts in a Starship about to invade Earth As the ship starts its approach the Sargeant in the invading infantry force readies his flintlock and advises his troopers to hit the chamber pots before they land. Something then flashes past a window ...there are explosions and the next thing the Sargent knows he is being interrogated by humans. The humans figure out that out in the galaxy the"Hyperdrive" is apparently very easy to figure out but that no one out there has had the planetary geographical impediments humans have had and never advanced far with anything else. Andy | 2124 comments Harry Turtledove's "The Road Not Taken" http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ro... is the second story. the first one sounds a bit like Christopher Anvil's Pandora's Planet

Robert Cauley | 175 comments Hi Andy, That 1st one is it. I already have a book at my folks but it will be a while before i get to it so I went ahead and ordered it.The 2nd is not a book and I do have the Pandora book. The short story I am thinking of is not an invasion it is one where the galactic community discovers earth and decides to introduce earth to the galaxy and vice versa. Robert C

The Road Not Taken is in Masterpieces: The Best Science Fiction of the 20th Century, for one source. I'm sure it's in others.

Robert Cauley | 175 comments found the road not taken by turtledove. looking now for the other. read around the same the turtledove story was anthologized. it starts to dawn on people that the galactics are not all that smart when one character repeatedly sells the Brooklyn bridge and a bishops is shocked when asked where a galactic can find a cow to sacrifice.

Robert, please copy the description for the first short story into a new thread/topic. We'll mark the second short story as Solved. I've updated the header with a description of the second short story (feel free to edit it).

One request per thread avoids confusion. An exception would be if the two short stories appeared in the same book.

Robert Cauley | 175 comments Looking for a science fiction short story
in which the earth makes contact when aliens arrive. people start to realize that the aliens are not actually that smart after one guy sells them the Brooklyn Bridge several times and the Captain of the aliens starship asks a Bishop where they can get a cow to sacrifice to the gods. They figure the average IQ of all of the aliens is about 75.

Andy | 2124 comments Robert: You might be better off starting a new thread for this story. However, you might find your story on one of these Tvtropes pages (check under literature) http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php...
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php...
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php...

I'm still thinking that this is Pandora's Planet - this article even mentions the Brooklyn Bridge incident as being in that book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3A...

Robert, you still need to start your own thread. Go to the link below to do it. Right now you're just piggybacked in a solved thread. Ain't many people going to see it here.
