I think mine was that bad at one time but I just deleted all of them a while ago and started again.

I was thinking that when I cleared the list, I thought if I really want to read it, I will.

I still find the Randomiser a good way to select books every now and then.

I use that on my group's bookshelf to choose the set of books to vote on for our next read. For us, it seems to work better than member nominations -- more likely to bring up less common but very discussable books.

Since I've had a vision problem, I have a different view on the books. I can't bear the thought that I'll maybe not able to read all the books I want to. So I operate on GR with a the list of 30 books or less. It keeps me focused on what I intend/hope to read in the next few months.
If the list starts getting to 30, I look to see what to take off it. For example I'll probably take Remembrance of Things Past Swanns Way off it soon, since I'm no closer to reading it now than at any stage in the rest of my life. It will probably reappear at some stage!
@Gill I was reading about Proust the other day and I'm thinking about a year of Proust once I've finished Dante. It feels like something I have to read at some point but it is so so long it is a bit monumental and I do hate the idea of not reading anything else

In any case, I don't really use it to decide what to read next very often, although I will reorganize it so that books on it that I plan to read soon will be closer to the top.

There's 160 on there right now - it was somewhere in the low 200s before I cleaned, can't quite remember. So, not too bad.
I'm so sorry about your vision trouble. I wouldn't be able to bear that thought either. :( That's a great system, limiting it to 30. I do something similar where I have a smaller TBR list, my "priority list." That one has 45 on it and it's the books that sound the most appealing to me right now or that I've been meaning to get to.
I wish goodreads had a shopping list section! I like to make a note if books I want to read but don't own and books I already own and want to read but they all have to go on one tbr list

I have done that but it annoys me they have to be on one of the 3 shelves

My 'tbr' on Goodreads is like over 1000. I want to narrow it down to the ones I actually own. I usually add anything I am interested in to it.

I've just made two exclusive lists - a "to read" list (books I already own) and a wish list - books I would like to read but don't own. I am going to thin out my wishlist too!

At the bottom of the review page, you can 'tick' a box if you own a book. Remember to then 'save' your review. I wonder if that would help you.
Then, at the bottom of your Bookshelf page, it has a shelf called 'owned'.

At first I thought maybe you didn't realize you can add shelves, but I THINK I understand now (maybe)... So, your books can go on multiple shelves, yes, but it bugs you that they HAVE to go on either Read, Currently Reading, or Want to Read. Am I understanding correctly? I'm not sure I understand the problem though because you either have read a book or want to read a book - would you add a book you have no interest in? And if you're shopping for a book, that means you want to read it, right? That's where I'm confuzzled.
You CAN have multiple TBR lists - is that the issue? You just add the book to your "Want to Read" and then whatever other shelf you want. For instance I have a "priority list" with books that I want to read before the others.

You could have a To be Read and a Priority TBR shelf, maybe?

Yes, I've just done that with my shelves to differentiate between what I actually own and need to read, and those I don't own.

I mainly use the app so the shelving is a bit less clear. I think I need to create an exclusive shelf.
I often have books I want to remember as recommended to me but I might want to look them up later before adding to my TBR. I don't have the time to add multiple shelves so a tbr soon and a tbr later would be perfect for me

Replying to myself! What I want the exclusive shelf for, is to keep a list of the non-fiction books that I have on my kindle. It's not that any of them are vital to read in the near future but if I don't have a list handy I'm never going to get round to reading any of them.

@Heather A rec tbr?
Not sure if you two were asking a question.

I'm sorted with it now, Bette. Thanks
I wasn't really asking a questions as I know the answer, just don't like it! Shelves aren't great on the app, I don't think. Something the developers need to work on

I have noticed that too.
