Episode requests

I have a request for an episode theme.. My friend & I are book addicts & we often lend each other books, so we read a lot of the same things.

We listen to & love a lot of book podcasts & we're always impressed by the way that you guys & other podcasters can discuss books in depth & thoughtfully for a good length of time (& make it sound easy!). The author interviews are also skilfully done & flow well.

We really want to get better at discussing & debating books after reading them - we don't want to stop at 'it was really good' but really dig into them more.

As you have a lot of experience in this area can you help? How do you make for a good book discussion??

I would love to hear you talking about some of the Canadian books you have enjoyed. Perhaps your guest from the last episode could be brought in again. Love the podcast and looking forward to meeting Simon in Asheville.

Simon is much more of the expert on discussing books. I think that would be interesting to talk about.

I have a fair amount of Canadian lit under my belt thanks to Ron. But, with the exception of Atwood, most of my experience is of lit at least a decade old.

Besides the biggies like Atwood and Munro, etc., which Canadian authors should we be reading?

Yes I loved Annabel by Kathleen Winters. Joseph Boyden's recent book The Orenda I'm finding a struggle, but loved Three day Road, about two Cree snipers in WW1. Miriam Toews' s new novel All my Puny Sorrows is supposed to be heart wrenchingly beautiful. As mysteries go, the series with Inspector Gamache by Louise Penny is well loved. Also liked Jane Urquhart Stone Carvers, also with connection to WW I.

I think Simon and Thomas may enjoy Fruit by Brian Francis, also Canadian.
