SOLVED. Lit. book published '96--99? coming of age/first love between teenaged boy and girl. [s]

I believe it was published by Riverhead books. Each chapter was different pov between boy and girl. One pov was written in the first person, other in 3rd person. Girl winds up with a boyfriend who is kind of sketchy. Two main characters have first sexual encounter in a pool. Paperback book, the cover has a plastic cowboy or indian or maybe even a plastic cactus. I always think it's called "Always Coming Home" but that's a Le Guin book.
