message 1: by Winter, Group Reads (last edited Aug 01, 2017 11:29PM) (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Hi all!

It's already time to vote for September! The theme of September is Education.

Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate. Thank you :)

Here are some short rules for nominating books:

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please include the name of the book and the author or link to the book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

~ When nominating, please state a connection to the theme.

~ You cannot nominate a book which has previously been a group read. Past buddy reads are fine. (See Group Reads in the bookshelf)

This thread will be closed by August 25th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose the ten most nominated. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the Goodreads average rating to see which is highest.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I nominate The Last Thousand: One School's Promise in a Nation at War by Jeffrey Stern. It examines a westernized school in Marefat, Afghanistan, what happened to its mission of educating boys and girls during the final days of American occupation, and what happened once the Americans left. Looks fascinating!

message 3: by Ilona (last edited Jul 06, 2017 07:26AM) (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments I would like to nominate Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, as I think that we can learn so much from our own history.

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) | 2176 comments I would like to nominate Brave New World. This book talks about a new education for society, and in the current world we live in, it's very relevant.

message 5: by katie (new)

katie | 160 comments I'll nominate Sassafrass, Cypress and Indigo by Ntozake Shange. It's about three sisters, one goes to college, but the other two seek their own version of education.

message 6: by Melanie (last edited Jul 07, 2017 10:21AM) (new)

Melanie | 40 comments I would like to nominate The Secret History by Donna Tartt

In this novel a group of college students at an elite college take their education into the classics to the extreme and it leads them down a dark path towards their own destruction.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark

The book takes place at a girls school and revolves around the relationship between a teacher and her students

message 8: by Ellen (last edited Jul 06, 2017 03:57PM) (new)

Ellen (ellen-jane) | 9 comments Winger by andrew smith as its set at a boarding school.

Nurai I second The Secret History by Donna Tartt!

I second Sapiens

Thanks, Chrissy! I still haven't read it, but I love her plays so much, I'm really interested in checking it out.

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Unfortunately we have already read The Secret History. Sadly I was going to second it too, but feel free to nominate another book :)

message 14: by Auntie Terror (last edited Jul 09, 2017 09:35AM) (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments I'd like to nominate Binti (Binti, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor Binti by Nnedi Okorafor.
It is the start of a scifi trilogy centred around Binti, the first of the Himba tribe to be offered a place at the best university in the galaxy (see the link to the month's topic!). But trouble starts on the journey already, Binti gets drawn into an interstellar conflict older than she is - and survival will only be possible If she can combine the wisdom of her people and the knowledge within the university...

Oh sorry I went through the read books and missed that there was more than one page. Do you need me to delete my comment?

message 16: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 40 comments Since my nomination was previously read I will second Brave New World.

message 17: by Lisa (last edited Jul 11, 2017 01:02PM) (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Elle wrote: "I would like to nominate the book "I am Malala" about a girl who stood up for education and was shot by Taliban soldiers.

This book is very inspiring, and has an amazing story!!!"

Hi Elle, unfortunately that one has already been a group read so it's not eligible to be nominated.
Feel free to mention it as a buddy read instead, if you'd be interested in discussing it with others though :)

message 18: by Siren (new)

Siren (boxilot) | 24 comments I second (third?) Brave New World :)

message 19: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Elle wrote: "okay"

But please, feel free to nominate another book :)

message 20: by Elle (new)

Elle | 19 comments I will nominate the book "A girl named Digit"
I haven't read this book yet, but I have been meaning to for a while. I looks really good. And is about a very unique girl going to school!

message 21: by Marcus (new)

Marcus Vinicius | 110 comments I third "Brave New World".

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Why, oh why, must we only nominate one book - it's simply not fair to the other books! They'll have their feelings hurt?

I had 3 or 4 in mind but I landed on this particular one through an extremely scientific method of decision making: the amazing coin flip!
I'm nominating To Sir, With Love

message 23: by Mindy (new)

Mindy Jones (mindyrecycles) Seconding Miss Jean Brodie!

message 24: by Linzie (new)

Linzie Pflumm (linzwo) | 13 comments I will nominate Reading with Patrick: A Teacher, a Student, and a Life-Changing Friendship by Kuo, Michelle. Reading with Patrick is an inspirational story of friendship, a coming-of-age story of both a young teacher and a student, a deeply resonant meditation on education, race, and justice in the rural South, and a love letter to literature and its power to transcend social barriers

message 25: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments I'm nominating Night by Elie Wiesel (Night, Elie Wiesel).

Because it's important to educate ourself of the past to avoid it repeating itself in the future.
