I felt like they must have both got a shared satisfaction from what they inflicted on the young girls. When the first girl was killed they must have felt similar about. Maybe a sense of power. They went on to have pretty non descript lives, though Stokely's job was kind of perfect for their serial killing.
I think you're right, Angela. And, their first kill was together, which paved the way for their partnership. They fed off of each other.
