Laurie (laugal) I went to a 90 year old bookstore yesterday.I have lived within 20 miles of this place my entire life and never heard of it.The building was very old and creaky floors, but it was packed to the walls and ceilings with new and used books. The ceilings had to be 13 feet tall! The building smelled old and the smell of books was almost intoxicating! I went thru the 2nd floor of fiction and literature, and the first floor of local books, new books and children's books! They had rooms for Adventure,Sci Fi, Horror, Mystery. There is even a cat that lives there. The cat approached us at the door and watched us for a bit and then came over to us for some attention, then left us to shop! I have read Catherine Gildener's Books-TOO CLOSE TO THE FALLS, AFTER THE FALLS. She has come out with a new books COMING ASHORE. The store owner showed me that it was autographed by the author. He knows her and regularly drives to Toronto to have her sign books! I was thrilled. I am attaching the link here.If you are ever in Niagara Falls, NY,you must seek this place out! http://www.fallsbookcorner.com/

Although the original official GR Thread has been closed: I have just written to Goodreads & requested that we become a "Featured" group.

We need exposure and contacting the powers that be, was the only way in which I could think of attracting new members!

Laurie (laugal) Went to the annual AAUW book sale today. They raise funds for scholarships. They have over 200,000 books! Once this sale is over tomorrow, any leftover books will be donated to other charitable sellers. Then next year a whole new batch of books for sale. Today was half price day,so hardcovers were 50 cents and paperbacks were 25 cents.Tomorrow is the bag sale, usually $5,00 for any books you can get in a bag. But today, someone said it will be$1.00 for a bag of books! I spent $8.75 cents and bought 14 books! I love this sale, my friends and I wait for it all year!!!!!!! This book sale makes all others in our area pale by comparison!

Do they donate to Better World Books? If they do they can get 25% return on all sold books by BWB!

I don't believe they do. On the last day you see lots of trucks lined up.The org. allows other non-profits to come in and TAKE what books are left. I know a local museum gets some of the leftovers. So one way or the other, the books get another chance to live on.

How cool! I visited my favorite independent bookstore yesterday. It's a Mysteries only bookstore in Minneapolis - in the Uptown area of south Minneapolis. It used to be kind of on my way home from wotk, so I went more often. My work moved last year, so no longer close. It"s called Once Upon a Crime :-) It's small, but the owners know their stuff. And a lot of Minnesota's mystery authors (there are many) will do talks there when their books are published. I've met William Kent Krueger, Brian Freeman, PJ Tracy, Jess Lourey and Laura Childs there.

We encourage our members to leave ratings & reviews (brief or lengthy) of the books they've read in the What Are You Reading thread.

If you click on the reply tab on the bottom right of each person's posting, you can tie your comments directly to that review. (As I've done with this one.)

We set up a the thread every quarter ... so there will be a new one in a few days for July-Sept.

And if you enjoy classics: Maurice

message 77: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Conlon (goodreadscomchristopherconlon) Deme, I’d urge you to give a try to Christopher Isherwood—A Single Man is my favorite—and James Baldwin, whose Giovanni’s Room and Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone both feature LGBTQ themes. All of these are classics.

Ah, there's so much life out there..... I read a lot, but I have to go out & now I take art classes, volunteer, show my work, walk the local botanical gardens!

I still prefer my solitude most of the time!

message 84: by Michael (new)

Michael Wakeman | 6 comments I agree with 99% of what you say! But, with no car and the local botanical garden miles away, I don't get to visit there. Would love to see the butterflys when they come out. As far as art is concerned, I could have gone to the KC Art Institute but my ex sad we couldn't afford it. Glad I didn't go as I perfected my own art and even had my Art Appreciation teacher(Douglass Freed, please look up if you want to see his work) tell me, "You are an artist." Have sold many paintings in my life and have been sporadically creative lately. Plan on getting back to it soon. For one thing, the book "Death and Mr. Pickwick" about Robert Seymore marries the art of illustrating with the classics, chiefly Dickens. I go on and on. Sorry.

Classes are getting ready to start, it's the beginning of my Senior year of Business School and looks like I am heading for some extended time as well as another option for loans and aid. I've been doing a lot of personal marketing and getting very annoyed by Robo-Calls. Been spending too much money on food delivery services and am really looking for a breaking point. I been spending more time on social media than books and it might mean something. Anybody have any views?
