The book is based in India. The main character is a young man who leaves his home village for a pilgrimage or just an adventure before settling down.
While he is doing leaving home, the Goddess of Love is being harassed by the God of War. She wants him to leave her alone; he wants her as his wife.
The two make a bet on the young man. If the God of War kills the human, the Goddess will marry him. If the Goddess of Love get said human to have sex with 5 (or 7, can't remember) different women, the God will leave her alone for 100 years.
The young man goes on his journey, not knowing about the bet and finds himself in various situations, both provocative and deadly, due to divine intervention.
One of the women he has sex with is a Maharajah's wife and another is a priestess.
