A fan of the controversial statement, Liz Gilbert also graced us with the following in Big Magic:

"Human artistic expression is blessedly, refreshingly nonessential."

In the following chapter, she also says that pure creativity is magnificent because "it is the opposite of everything else in life that's essential or inescapable," like food, shelter, social order, responsibility loss, death, etc. Gilbert even says comments on the usefulness of writers; how many people believe them to be useless because they don't do special things like doctors, teachers, or firemen.

What is your stance on the essentialness of expression? Do you agree with Gilbert that, despite her own career choice, writers are not useful compared to other professions out there?
