Ashley I have wondered: Do authors ever cry when they kill one of their characters?
Or are they just like: Ha! You're dead!
What do you think?
(feel free to add me as a friend btw)

Channah Davidson I think its fifty fifty. Honestly , I think that a part of veronica was trying to cope with the loss and part of her was smirking thinking how mad readers would be.

Ashley yeah, I think you're right, they do enjoy how readers react.
Thank you for answering my question so fast!

Kristy Kamin I cry when I kill off any of my characters I was attached to, and I mean with real tears and sobbing. Your characters become a part of your world while you are writing, they almost seem real. It's like your child just died in a way.

I don't think so... because the are the ones who killed them and they can definetly change that!😉

David A Willson Ashley,

I'm just finishing my first novel, and I have to tell you that not only did I cry when I killed off my favorite character, but every time I re-wrote the scene, I shed a tear as well.

On the other hand, I didn't mourn when I killed off the bad guys. Well, maybe a little.

So, I would say the answer is: depends on the character! Sometimes, it just feels like justice.... :)

ren I feel like authors are partly sad because they created the character, but the other part- the evil part- is laughing evilly because they know the readers have become attached too and this may just permanently scar the reader.

MetalMouth If they don't cry then they ain't human. "There is nothing more loyal than a book" is true until they kill your favorite character. But they most likely feel guilt because of the readers opinion.

Weellll... I'm those sorta writer who smiles while gruesomely killing off a character(blood everywhere! Yay! XD). So l guess it kinda depends on the writer...
Maybe l shouldn't be answering this. I always feel like laughing out loud whenever a super-sad death occurs... A tear would be leaking out, and I'll be smiling. If the death makes me cry, it's written very well. So, it's a good death. XD
(Don't mind my harsh reasonings... XD)

Felicia Allen I write short stories/novellas and every time one of my good characters die, I cry. If a bad guy dies, I don't.

Ehtan Krase I think the author would have chosen to kill them to add to the story, but i wish Tris had lived, it was just sad when she didn't.

Ashley Yup, me too, my mother was wondering why I was making this dying whale sounds.....

CA As an author-in-progress, I have cried so much! Characters are hard to kill off, especially when they are important and lovable characters!

Zoey Hmmm. Well, I've written a book, it isn't published yet, but when one of my characters were killed off, I found it rather inevitable. But I think its fifty fifty. I think the power of the scene and what it means, and the power of the words written, is what makes it sad. It honestly just depends how attached the author is to the character and if the character was likeable or not.
