The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter may be a good one. I think it's geared toward younger teens as the language is easy but very engaging. The series is about a girl who goes to a school for spies. The first book is called I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You. I know, it sounds brutal, but it's really not. It's about a girl who falls for a regular boy who has no idea she's training to be a spy. The books are cute and fun. There's not really any violence or anything major in terms of dark material (like Hunger Games, etc) until book 3 or 4 and even then it's pretty tame compared to what's out there in terms of YA. These books are also shorter than the average YA book, so they might be worth a shot. Ally Carter's other series, Uncommon Criminals may also be a good one. Kelly Oram writes clean contemporary romance books that are good too. Hope this helps!

OK - thanks for that. Her mum described her as a bit tomboy-ish I'm not sure anything centred around boy-girl relationships will appeal although JTTRS has a beautifully understated boy-girl relationship building at the heart of the book but the story follows several other main threads and issues other than that relationship are central to the narrative.

I know Noughts and Crosses and Tell Me No Lies by Malorie Blackman are also quite gripping but again the boy-girl relationship is fairly central.
I know Percy Jackson is kind of Fantasy, but with the modern-day setting and the funny narrative it appeals to a lot of different audiences. If she's looking for something more "real" I would highly recommend Out of My Mind.

Percy Jackson was one of the first books I really got into, so I second this.

Stephen King is good to get kids hooked on reading if you can find an age appropriate one.

At the moment I have little idea what she has read or what kind of books she likes but she has said she isn't keen on reading so I doubt she has read any more than she has had to via texts used at school in her English lessons. I'm awaiting some feedback from her mum and brother on what might be suitable but thought I would ask here anyway. I wanted a book that wasn't available as a film - she's watched a lot of films e.g. Harry Potter and I don't think she's really interested in the fantasy/magic genre - I was thinking of something more intriguing. I think the Dark Materials, Hunger Games and LOTR would definitely not be right for her. I wanted a book that would not be too demanding to read so not one with very complex language or one that is too long,
I've read a fair number of children's books - Eva Ibbotson's - Journey to the River Sea is one I rate but it's not a short book - I found it a very involving story and it has an inspiring female protagonist in Maia. I also like some of Tim Bowlers books - River Boy was a touching and enigmatic, almost supernatural, story but I wasn't sure if it would appeal as much as JTTRS but it has the advantage of being much shorter. I probably need more information to guide my question - I'll add to this thread when I get it.
