1) If you could pinpoint 1 or 2 emotions this book emoted from you, what would those be? And why?

Sadness because of the heartache of losing children, and sisters, barn burning down, the hurt and worry with Baby William.

Torn because of seeing both sides of the story and wanting to help the family, but not wanting to ruin their lives in the process.

Shock is the first emotion that comes to mind. I can't believe we were doing that!! In the US!!! In the not so distant past!!! We act like we are such an advanced, progressive nation but i really have to wonder at times. Don't get me wrong, I love this country and am indeed proud to be an American, but we consistently sweep issues under the carpet and refuse to address them. Take for example the current continual increase of children who are hungry in the US. Seriously??? In this country??? With all the resources we have??!! It frustrates me. I will stop my soapbox before I really go off, sorry!

I was angry at "the system." Jane was unable to do what was best for her clients because of the bureaucracy and red tape that are so blind to individual needs. I also felt torn in two directions at times. Some of what the state was doing WAS for the best for the children and for the people as a whole.

Bewilderment - how can these things happen?! I am also reminded of a piece of a quote a friend once shared with me - man's inhumanity to man - and 'the natural man is an enemy to God'.

I know this is really late in the game for me. I was trying a different approach than I have before. I read the book a second time, and I wanted to see how you all answered questions:

Emotions: The emotions that occurred between Jane and her husband. I didn't always feel that she was fair with him, and he with her. He was tough with her on her choice of employment, and she was happy with what she was doing, and he was very critical of her.
