Am I the only one that thinks it's a little odd that a twenty year old german soldier kisses a twelve year old child?

Nope theres a kinda big age gap there. It would be weird
Oh, come on (you've been living in the 21st century too long)...
12 year olds were married to freakishly old guys back then. An 8 year gap is nothin compared to 20-30 years.
No, this book takes place in the 1940s. It was not that common for 12 year olds to marry then. They were considered children. 100+ years prior it was common, but this was disturbing. Particularly given the age gap and circumstances.
