Art (aka Whistler Reads) (art-whistlerreads) There were several main characters, crew members, from differing environments, i.e. Earth, Higher gravity planets, etc.
A single most memorable moment for me was when the obligatory math genius put their ship into close orbit around some sun to do a few calculations. The pencil tip went through the paper, writing on both sides at once!
Obviously, pre-personal compooper.
I purchased this book off a used book rack for a dime in late 1962, it got left behind when I joined the AF in '63. I'm getting ready to revisit EE Smith circa 1936, and would like to find some of the other oldies I (only partially) remember reading from those days.

Art, do you remember anything about the cover image?

What type of problems did they try to solve?

Did the crew spend most of their time in planets other than Earth (how are they described) or on their spaceship?

Art (aka Whistler Reads) (art-whistlerreads) .....my memories're pretty faded, read over 50 years ago .....
probably written a while before that ... '40s 'pulp'...
,
Wasn't EE Smith, or Asimov, or Heinlein

John Brunner maybe? I've only read one or two of his books, so have no idea if it could be him, but he was writing some in the later part of that time period.

It's a bit before my time, and my older brother (I forcibly inherited his books when he got married--by moving them all into MY half of the bedroom I shared with my younger sister) was more into fantasy and adventure--Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, H. Rider Haggard etc.--than he was in sci-fi. I didn't get into sci-fi until the end of the 60's when the kid that set next to me on the bus to and from school (an hour long commute each way) started swapping books with me to help that travel time pass faster.

Michele | 2488 comments Do you recall if there was an overall story arc, or was it just a series of problem-solving episodes? Anything about the age of the characters?

We have to move this to Abandoned since Art has left the group; but people can still feel free to post if they want.
