I bought this book sometime in the mid-2000s, probably from an airport bookseller. One of those paperback thrillers like Preston and Child (though it isn't them). The bulk of the book is set in the near future, there is a mother and at least one son. The father was either killed or missing from the beginning of the novel. The son is at university, plays on the football team, I remember at least one scene where is is playing in a game, and the play is projected to the inside of the helmet. The mom has some training thing going on with martial arts and swords (to protect herself?) Not a lot to go on here, which is why I am having trouble finding it!

Would you call this science fiction?

I think that it's a book about a monster? Like that may be about how the dad died? But it has some historical context, like its tied to an ancient civilization that they were researching. That's my best guess! I know that's little to nothing to go on. Just driving me crazy that I can't remember more!
